I bought our first punnet of strawberries yesterday (realising they are probably only ripening in the north this early).
They were so full of flavour and perfect. I always think the best strawberries are early in the season, unlike other fruit which gets better as the season goes on.
I think it is texture as well as flavour as the hotter weather makes the fruit softer and not as lovely.
I will be back to buy more today.

Yes, like Helen I bought my first punnet of strawberries last week. I hadn't intended to but they looked so red and in such good condition I said yes. They were just as Helen said, full of flavour and perfect. They were these ones [sweetred.co.nz]
Later that week I saw some cheaper ones in a different supermarket but they had that green and white area under the stalk and I knew, just by looking at them, that they wouldn't be a patch on the Sweet Red brand ones I'd bought.

I buy strawberries at our local greengrocer, they are reliably good. Our greengrocer is over the road from our NW so easy to pop to.
Often the are Garelja Bros from Kumeu but yes the Sweet Red are good as well.
Interestingly the bags of green grapes that are available at supermarkets and greengrocers are so much better at our greengrocer yet the packaging appears the same. Grapes are one of the few fruits that our 14 year old can tolerate (not by choice but he has post infectious IBS) and the bags of green grapes from Jack Lums are so much more flavoursome than what looks to be the same grapes from NW.
It wasn't just me being weird, we could all taste the difference. Plus the greengrocer grapes were slightly less $$ per kg.
