When I was a child the Canterbury plains from Christchurch running towards Springfield on the West Coast road were full of pig farms. The traditional outdoor types and we used to love spotting piglets.
These have long since gone as intensive farming has taken over etc...
The land is well suited to pigs being shingle based.
Freedom farm sows are free range farmed in that area now with the men from Christchurch prison at Rolleston working on the farm.
It is lovely to see Poaka win at the NZ food awards last night, they are making amazing salami from pigs that are farmed near Kirwee, in the same area.
I love that what was once there is slowly returning to give us choices in what we are buying and eating. Poaka pigs look to have an awesome life, completely free range.

I see that some New World supermarkets stock Poaka products - hopefully now they've won the award other supermarkets will follow. We can buy Havoc pork products from one of our supermarkets here in Nelson, and I agree that it's great that we have more genuinely organic free-range producers to choose from now. Great too that they make sausages which are preservative-free!

Or, in the South Island [poaka.co.nz]
