Hi Foodies,
Does anyone know where I can buy yeast on line?.I'live in Gore, and there hasn't been any available for weeks. Need to make my own bread, as grocery deliveries are pretty eratic, and I'm well over 70, so am trying to stay quarantined.
By the way, I tried making the sour dough starter that's on the Foodlovers recipe site.
At first it appeared to be working well, but by the third day it was smelling like vomit, and was turning pink. I checked on line and read that it was probably contaminated with Clostostiridium??? and could be dangerous, so threw it out.
I have no idea where i went wrong, as I know others have successfully made sour dough starters.

That said, have you seen this place? It isn't clear on their website if they're shipping at the moment, but being a food ingredient retailer, they may well be operating as usual. Perhaps worth a call to check.

I think Chris's suggestion is a good one, I have a friend from Christchurch who has been making sour dough for many years, she now lives in Rawene at the top of the North Island but in the end if you live in a remote area how great would it be not to be reliant on hard to find ingredients. If you have no luck with the NZ sourdough group I'd be happy to put her in touch with you, she's an expert (in my humble opinion).

Jenny, just a word about sourdough - if you have plenty of flour at the moment it's fine, but if you don't, yeast is probably a better choice as it takes up quite a bit of flour keeping your starter fed, even if you refrigerate it between uses. You were 100% correct in chucking out your pink starter.

I bake only every 10 days or so. I keep about a tablespoon of starter in the fridge and build it up to what I need on the day, take out what I need and leave a very small amount to go back into the fridge. I have no discard that way. If I want pancakes or crackers that use discard I just build up my starter again.

I don't have lot of flour at present, so won't be trying another sour dough starter for a while. I've been on lots of sour dough baker sites trying to learn, but I find that it is far from an exact science. It seems what works for one, doesn't always work for others.
I appreciate very much all your helpful suggestions, and especially to those who have offered me yeast.
A big thank you to you all.

If you have some dried fruit and you're keen to have a goat making your own yeast, here's a method that's doing the rounds:
