Hi there
I purchased a secondhand panasonic breadmaker awhile ago. I have had a few hits and misses with it but overall loving the fresh bread thing. I really want to get a new breadmaker and would love some recommendations please. Are there any bread makers in NZ that make horizontal loaves? Many thanks!

Minnie, I have an old Panasonic bread maker, bought new years ago. It's still going strong, although these days we tend to use it 'to dough stage' for ciabatta etc, etc. rather than loaves, as I don't have to worry about school lunches any more. That said, if I was in the market for a new one, I believe Panasonic is still one of the better brands and I would have no hesitation in buying another one.
Re horizontal loaves, I am not sure if such a bread maker exists, but I always used to tip the Panasonic loaf on its side and slice that way - apart from getting more slices, they were all uniform and square, rather than being oblong with a raised top.
Regards,
Barbara Anne

Sunbeam make a horizontal bread maker but they are like hen's teeth in NZ at the moment. Heathcotes seem to be the only one that has any in stock: [www.heathcotes.co.nz]
Have a look at the Sunbeam NZ website, too, it has a page with stockists and while I didn't look at all of them, the only one I found was in the above link for Heathcotes. There may others in the list who have them in stock.

I happened to get an email from the Kogan site and saw this Breadmaker which appears to be the long style. I have the Kogan Piemaker which has been excellent, I bought it about mid last year. Delivery and customer service were good so I can recommend the site. Don't know what this breadmaker is like but maybe you could google reviews on it. I think Kogan are somehow linked in Australia to Dick Smith who are no longer in NZ but maybe still trading in Aus.

I have a Breville Bakers Oven which I have had to learn to use as the recipe for plain bread in the instruction booklet was pretty much a failure if I adhered to the instructions and cooking choice number recommended. I did get in touch with them and was told that the instruction booklet was for Australia and they sent me instructions for NZ. If I bought again I think it'd be a Sunbeam although there is really nothing wrong with my Breville once I mastered using it!

Dawn.

Hi Averil,
Ciabatta Bread (bread maker version)
2 tsp dried yeast
445g flour
1tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
330ml water
1 tblsp olive oil
Method.
1. Place ingredients in pan of bread maker in order given. Select Dough cycle and Start.
2.When cycle completed, place dough in a bowl lightly greased with olive oil (dough will be quite sticky - resist the temptation to add more flour) and let rest for 15 mins.
3.Divide dough into two pieces and turn out onto lightly floured board. Form each piece into an oval shape, approx 10 x 35cm (100 x 350mm). Place loaves side by side in tray lined with baking paper. Dimple surface, cover and let rise in draught-free place for 45 mins.
4.Pre-heat oven to 200 deg C.
5. Dimple dough for second time, drizzle with a little oil and sprinkle with chopped rosemary and sea salt. Bake for 20 mins (I use fan bake). Recipe says to spritz with water every 5 -10 mins for crispier crust but I don't do that.
Enjoy!

Barbara Anne
