This may not be a new topic,I have become thoroughly addicted to Kombucha and wish to make my own at home. Does anyone have a "Scoby" to share with me please. Happy to buy, even happier if it was gifted. I live in the Manawatu/Horowhenua area so could collect .Thankyou fellow Foodlovers.

Hello Susannah,
I have a Kombucha and love it, I dont use the black tea bags I am using fruit flavours from Healtheries or Bell Tea. I got my Kefir Grains from Symbio, and was very pleased with the response, the quality and service and packaging. .they do have the Scobies as well. The Kefir grains are very very healthy and I have had them in daily use for several months now. Currently I am living way down south in Kurow, we are coming back to Palmerston North in the New Year. I will be happy enough to buy a new Scoby from Symbio when we are settled again.

Griz,Helen Jan and Roy thankyou for your input, I realise the scoby looks a bit yuck but the kombucha is such a super drink that I can cope I think. I'll try Symbio but not sure what Kefir is, would you enlighten me please Jan. I'm making hummus today and also the Vegan Aioli. I must say it's very good being in a community of cooks and foodies.

Hello Susannah,
Kefir, you can read about the goodness of this on the same Symbiota site...I have the milk Kefir Grains and it makes delicious fresh yoghurt, quite a" tart" taste BUT I have it on my weetbix with fruit every morning...great for cooking, adding to baking, or meat dishes
such as curries...smoothies..very healthy for the gut.I am sure you could flavour the yoghurt but I don't.
Hope this helps and encourages you to research further. Jan

Jan thanks for explaining Kefir. I am also DF so that will be why I haven't tried it before. I use coconut yoghurt very sparingly because it is so rich and very yummy. In days gone by (early 60's) there was a man in Te Atatu, a Mr Hoch who used to make delicious additive free yoghurt before the commercial companies started making the sweet awful concoction available now. I was preganant at the time and lived on this real yoghurt and mashed potato during that "can't eat anything" stage". My husband used to go out to buy it at his farm by the tray lot several times a week.
