I've just read this through two sittings because it has to go back to the library tomorrow. Maybe my views are coloured by the speed at which I read it, but I found most of the recipes unappealing, and I'm interested in other people's opinions. Many of the dishes I would happily eat if somebody made them for me but I wouldn't cook them myself. The only recipe I can envisage making is by far the simplest, onions braised in miso and butter.
Tell me what you think!

Interesting comment Tpandav, I have his other books but not Flavour, I do find his recipes tasty but as I live on my own really only cook them for family or guests. I have been to his restaurant in Soho, London and the food was some of the best I have ever tasted, and visually very appealing. I would also happily eat any of his recipes cooked by someone else!! Here's to 2021 reinvigorating my jaded palate.

I have all of his other books but the only one I use regularly is Jerusalem. I think my problem with Flavour is that the food is very "London", i.e. it pays no attention to seasonality and assumes that the reader has no garden but has a branch of Waitrose handy for buying things like rose harissa and celeriac. I am so used to cooking from our garden that I find unseasonal combinations a little jarring.

I have made the aubergine dumplings a few times and always well received, as well as the miso onions. There are a few others i want to try.. i think with these books they are a little out there and not everyday meals . I like that they push me to use ingredients I wouldn't ordinarily try!

I was given this for Christmas, I really wanted Hiakai, but my hints were ignored, I was also given tickets to Ottolenghi in Wellington in June. I find the reading/information in Flavour good, but of the 2 recipes made so far, I only enjoyed one, the other hmmmm, disappointing! I thought I was onto something with all the discussion at the start of each chapter, but it has left me wanting.

This is so timely for me! I have book tokens to spend and was almost decided to get Flavour, as my daughters and grand daughter have it (two of them plant-based eaters have Flavor ) and the thought of us all, in various places in the world, cooking from the same book had sentimental appeal. Perhaps not!

Jerusalem is singularly my favourite cookbook. There are so many recipes in there that I make regularly and my husbands impending decade birthday lunch will include dishes from it. I find the flavours wonderful.
I bought Simple but it annoyed me, I think because it was too simple, my fault for buying it.
I don't have Flavour but have at times borrowed my neighbours Plenty as there are recipes in there that I have used for entertaining.

On the strength of this thread and TPANDAV’s comment, I reserved Jerusalem at the local library and picked it up yesterday. How had I not heard of this book? From the number of recipes I’ve already got marked, I might have to buy it! After spending six weeks in the Middle East when Emma lived in Jordan, and falling in love with Israel, Jordan and Turkey, and Middle Eastern food, this was like a walk down memory lane. Thanks for leading me to this book.

I have just completed another Alps to Ocean and one of our travellers was saying that Ottolenghi Roast Chicken with Saffron, Hazelnuts and Honey is her go to show stopper dinner party recipe. I hadn't heard of it before but it is next on my list of recipes to try.

A work colleague was singing the praises of Ottolenghi Hasselback Beetroot with lime (as in Makrut/kaffir leaf) butter.
It is from Flavour I think.
I have just searched and found the recipe and because she was so enthusiastic about it I think I will give it a go this weekend.
Has anyone else tried this?

I recently purchased 'Falastin: a cookbook' by Sami Tamimi and Tara Wigley. Tamimi was 'Jerusalem's co-author, and Ottolenghi has written the introduction to 'Falastin'. Illuminating about life in the Palestinian territories, some great recipes, beautifully illustrated. It came out in 2020.
