Zeetra if you buy a box of cadburys favourites , they have cherry ripes in them , only biteseized ones but still cherry ripes ..... you used to be able to buy them here but they stopped making them for nz unfortunatly.

I'm with you Zeetra on the wish that NZ meat was cheaper.
I flatted in Parnell behind the shops, this was back in late 80's and there was a wonderful deli that a couple of men had but they sold it 1989, they made the most delicious pate and I am positive they used fresh marjoram and pink peppercorns and there was a shop that made the most wonderful yeast free bread. I loved the pate when I was pregnant, now I would be too scared to eat it if I was preggers

Palmiers are exceedingly easy to make, simply buy flaky pastry sheets, sprinkle with caster sugar, roll up from either side, and cut into finger-thick slices, sprinkle on more caster sugar and bake at 220 until golden. Sandwich with fresh cream and good preserves or fresh fruit. YUM!

Goodness, how times change. I don't want either of those things any more, even if they exist now. Some of the things people mention are probably much more available now. For instance, Delbos (NZ) seem to make a pretty good panchetta and I can get Italian parmigiano reggiano from the local store any time I wish these days. What food do I wish I could buy now? I can't think of anything!

Gosh, where to start! Blue vein cheese, greek olives, good salami, good chicken liver pate (not made with pork liver), semi dried tomatoes from Nosh, smoked salmon slices, lobster, etc, etc, etc. Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm! Just can't afford to buy these luxuries these days and sooo wish I could that I even dream about food sometimes!

Tess, have you thought about making your own chicken liver pate? Chicken livers themselves are quite cheap and a little goes a long way.
I've only made pate once for a stallholder's competition at ChCh Farmers' Market and mine was so-so, but the winning one was out of this world! I wish I had the recipe! The winner was, apparently, Nik Mavromatis from the ‘Real Sausage Co’, but I can't find his recipe on googling.

Jean, have you tried growing them? They are very easy - too easy in fact as I had a row in my tunnel house once and now have 'volunteers' springing up every year. I can mail you some seeds from one of last season's fruit if you want some.

I have got an excellent chicken liver pate recipe given to me by a friend and I've made it a few times over the years and it's always scrumptious. I can't say I've made for quite some time so I've now got no idea how much the chicken livers go for. What's nice about the recipe is that you can add your cracked pepper if you want, but it's just as fantastic without.
I was amazed to see the post about Cape Gooseberries as they grow like weeds at our place - I'm so sick of the sight of them!

Hi Lorna they seem to grow like weeds here as well West of Huntly quite high up. Still very thick fog here when I left to go out this morning at 10.30
They have had some frosts on some of them and looking a bit ragged but still have lots of fruit on but unfortunately not ripe and the cases are dropping still green.

Did you know they have a cookbook devoted to soups and they are the soup recipes that they also sell
[www.amazon.co.uk]
Our local library has it and periodically I check it out and cook from it. Their carrot and coconut soup has become one of our family favourites.
