Does anyone know where in Auckland you can buy galangal. Just bought a beginers Thai book and want to start right now but a lot of the ingredients are quite specialised.

Moshims in Tauranga sometimes has it. I think there are Moshims in Auckland too so that may be worth a try.

Another thought - if you can't find galangal use root ginger, they are similar.

I get galangal (dried) from little asian shops - if you are near Tai Ping in Dominion Rd, or Silver Bell (Dominion Rd again) also a little asian supply shop in Royal Oak Mall sells it...

You can get frozen galangal from all good asian supermarkets. Also, its not too hard to get plants, which grow very well in Auckland. While ginger can be used in place of Galangal, it lacks the hot, resinous flavour of the real article.

If the galangal, turmeric or ginger rhizome that you purchase from the fruit & veg shop has little nodules starting to form you can very easily plant it and as Virgil mentioned it should grow in Auckland.

I'm sure you can get fresh galangal at the Avondale Markets which are on Sunday mornings. If you do go, I would buy extra and freeze them for future use. You'll also find lots of other ingredients used in Asian cooking out there too and they are all super fresh.

Hi, I know this an old thread. I am looking for some galangal to try and make my own thai curry pastes. No luck at Avondale markets or silver bell. Does anyone where in Auckland (central preferably) I could find some.

I think we got our original piece from the Thai Products shop in Mt Albert, next door to the lawnmower shop on the corner of Lloyd Ave.

It grows very readily in Auckland and in our previous garden it was becoming a pest. We've recently moved house and have replanted the galangal, which is just starting to grow (if it was more established I could give you some). I love fresh galangal and as well as using it in curry pastes I treat it as a vegetable in the Lao way - very thinly sliced with chicken and coconut milk. It does need to be very fresh for this though.

saw some last sunday at La Cigale, the place that was selling avocado and citrus, (next to macadamia nut stand) I noticed there were quite big roots with useable galangal ginger as well.
