Did anyone else visit the Auckland Foodshow on Thursday and what did you think of it?
My sisters and I had a great time - but then we always do when we are together!
Not having to battle the weekend crowds has to be a huge advantage and also there seemed to be no limit to the samples readily distributed. We had to make a trip to the car to offload our bags at one stage.
I thoroughly enjoyed Annabel Langbein, in the demonstration hall, an extremely personable lady and her food looked so good.
My only criticism would be that this year, in my opinion, the amount of chutneys, relishes, dips, crackers and cheeses far outweighed any other product.
There did not appear to be as many cooked dishes being demonstrated. In fact, maybe a sign of the times, some companies who produce ready made sauces, just heated these and you sampled them without anything added. I tried an Indian brand of 'Tikki Marsala' and did not realise this and just about blew my head off- it was so hot in its natural state, no creams etc added.
Well nonetheless when the next show rolls around I shall be up for it again, a real fun day!!

I really regret not going on Thursday - and I don't think I would bother going again unless I chose a day where there were limited people.
People are rude and inconsiderate - some of the things I saw astounded me. I am sure some people went to get feed and thought that their entry fee of $20 entitled them to eat as much of anything they wanted! It's not a restaurant!!
One stand had some mushrooms cooked in ginger, garlic, etc, I think it was the Rice Bran Oil stand. I watched one greedy lady go back for seconds and thirds, each time with at least two pieces of mushroom on her toothpick. She was practically stuffing them in her mouth!
The other thing that bugged me were people that got a sample then proceeded to stand in front of the stand while they consumed their sample - could they not have moved on and let other people interested in the products have a turn?
Anyway enough grumbling. The 'in' thing was pesto! I also didn't worry about purchasing much at the show - there were things I wanted to purchase but the stands were so busy there wasn't a chance of being served.

Oh darn, I had originally planned to go to the show today with one of my sisters but she is really busy at work. So, we are going after lunch on Sunday. I hope it is not too busy then but suspect it may be. It will be the first time I have been so at least I will have some idea of what to expect now.

Jo there was a picture in the Herald yesterday of people helping themselves at a cheese stand and I'm afraid I was totally put off by a wave of thought of people breathing, talking, coughing, spluttering, choking .................etc............all over the food. No, not for me - not to say I wouldn't enjoy going to the Foodshow and taking it all in though!

My daughterand I had a girls day out, shopping at Botany and and St Lukes then off to the foodshow. Banged in Helen & Tammy briefly but came home with lots of goodies, much better on Thursday than last year when we went on the Friday. The crowds are not there and the stalls are easy to be viewed. I am sure that next year we will do theThursday thing again. Anything for a day off work anyway.

I went to the Wellington Show this year and wouldn't bother returning. I went on a Friday thinking it wouldn't be too busy- wrong. It was packed with people sampling food that is often trialled for free at New World.
The cooking demonstrations were jam packed and so I didn't get a look in, but the only good thing was finding a nice tea pot for my lovely wife for mothers day.
I don't know what I expected but it could be more interesting than it was.

I'm always surprised that there are not more innovative kitchen things on show. I know it's a food show, but what a great platform for all the hard-to-get and unusual items to come to the fore. I know we have the Home Show in September, but there's not a lot of that sort of thing there, either. I'm talking about things like pasta making machines, sushi rollers, mandolins, etc. Where are all the manufacturers/distributors/retailers of things like this?

It was my visit to a food show yesterday and I found it interestingr. I agree with the crowds around some of the stands and everyone making it their meal time or wine time. There were lots of the pesto and dip things as well as chutneys sauces and the ready to use products. Is this a change into the modern trend of instant cook.
I did go and watch Annabel as well and not sure what was going on on the other stage but there seemed to be an interest but oh the noise.
I must admit that I only tended to visit the stands that were not over crowded or if I was particularly interested in something or wanted to know about something in particular.
I generally wandered around and looked from a distance. Having said that I did get a few samples of goodies and did manage to spend money .
I stocked up on the rice bran oil package as it was much cheaper than what I had just paid at the supermarket 3 days ago ( i use it in one of my bread recipes) and yes the mushrooms were nice as were the potatoes.
I also spent on some blue cheeses and ofcourse I had to bring home some fancy chocolates for he who stays home.
The crowds had thined a bit by 4 pm so maybe that is the time to go.
The thing that made me cringe was looking at the floor oh what a job for someone to have to clean all that cheese etc tramped in and the toothpicks !!!!! every stand had bins or dishes to drop things in and there were big bins every where- no need for that!!!
Having said that I will go again next year if able. (I had to go do a job for he who stays home and was halfway there so that was my pass to go, well we'll say that )

Hi Folks
I went yesterday (Saturday) with my nearly 19 son. We arrived at 10.00 and left at 3.30. We had a great time, loved the crowds and the food- it's always great to share a few bugs around. We just loved the atmosphere! My son was entralled with Woody. We came home exhausted. For those of you who don't like crowds go in the afternoon. I have a friend who was working there, she said Friday afternoon was so quiet that they packed up and were home before 6.00.

The food show is a good place to buy products cheaper than you see in the supermarket - if you can carry them back to your car that is!
Pitango and Good taste soups were 3 for $10 whereas in the supermarket they are around $6 each. Many stands were offering discounts like this but with parking a good walk away it would be a challenge to carry.
It really wasn't any different from ChCh except it was about 10 times bigger.
For my own personal enjoyment I would love to see a hall dedicated to small producers - a bit like a farmers market set up. Unfortunatley it is currently too expensive for most artisan producers to consider.
I can't believe how many dips and pestos there are on the market - ChCh was exactly the same - flooded with them!
It will be interesting to see which brands survive as surely we can't be eating as much as is being supplied.
I went on Thursday and if I hadn't I wouldn't have bothered going, from previous years the scavenger mentality is just awful.

We spent most of the day there today , got there about 11 and up untill about 2 it was very crowded , and there were some very rude people there, had one woman push past me to get some cheese and she was quite tall and as she pushed past quite enthusiastically she wacked me in the face with her backpack , didnt even bother to apologise. But apart from that we really enjoyed our time there,we bought lots of goodies there , one thing i really liked but regret not buying was the mushroom essence from the aromatics stand... i thought that was amazing. Bruce came out with so many different kinds of cheese ...... i think in a past life he may have been a rat or mouse
I know the competitions are just to get you on a database , but i entered so many i hope i win something
we left about 530 throughly exhausted but it was a great day out
Tessa....

I spent most of the day there on Saturday.
Got there at about 11 and left when it closed at 6pm. Went to see Donna Hay who was great and another guy from Northland when I wanted to rest my tired feet.
I took a backpack this year (hope it wasn't me that hit you in the face Tessa) as I got tired of carrying this last year. This help on two fronts because I could only buy what would fit in my bag and my hands/arms didn't get tired.

We went on Saturday at 10 when it opened and left at 2. We Julie Le Clerc who was funny and she had turned up the oven too high so a chocolate dessert she was making got burnt.
We love taking our two sons 6 and 4 so they can try things before we buy them and then discover they dont like them. I wish they would make the age for children higher though or a cost for younger children less as I had to pay $17 for my 6 year old and he wouldn't have eaten that much at all. I guess there are 6 year olds that eat a lot though.
I thought there seemed to be more free samples to take home this year which was great because you get quite full.
