I'm following Weight Watchers no-count plan. Although a little more restrictive than the full points version (only 3 points a day allowd), I find it a lot easier. There is a list of no-count foods including lean meats etc, all fruit and vege, low fat milks and yogurts, a few plain cereals and 2 slices of bread a day. It means I can have a wine each night , unlimited trim coffees and plenty of fresh fruit, (portion size is according to hunger.) I've had to pretty much cut out cheese, butter/fats, baked goods and rubbish - which doesn't hurt. It's basic, simple, healthy food.

Judith, what a time of the year to be thinking of dieting!
I don't know if this will be any help at all, but I'll offer it in case it is.
Once upon a time I read many books on nutrition.
You learn so much about what food can and does do to your body that, well, it just changes your mindset. You don't look at a chocolate chip biscuit and go yum, that's for sure.
But we're all different and all the nutrition books (and all the diet books) in the world, might make no difference.
But I would recommend reading nutrition books rather than diet books. It might just change your mind. And after all, that's what's needed. Then the change in food follows.
I've lost touch with what nutrition books are out there now (don't need to read any more of them) so I can't really recommend any. Something like this [www.fishpond.co.nz] might be worth looking at. Then there's books like this [www.fishpond.co.nz] Then there's this [www.fishpond.co.nz]

I think it is more important to concentrate on eating more whole foods, and making the fats you eat - a good quality - for example avocados and meat.
To loose weight exercise - build muscle - it may weigh more than fat - but is smaller and firmer, and constantly burns fat - even when you are resting.
And do cardio exercise - this will directly burn the fat.
If you cut back the calories too much - your body will conserve energy - look at the statistics - those diets created more morib obesity than ever before! you loose weight, then put on more than you lost.
The only true way to lose weight (other than surgically - which i found very effective) is to lose weight slowly and allow you body and mind to catch up, not rush it.
If you exercise in the morning it keeps your metabolism higher all day - thus giving you more energy and helping you lose weight.
Always allow yourself the odd indescretion, don't let guilt turn a small slip into a major binge - just go with it, enjoy it to the max - get your calories worth out of the treat - then move on with the healthy eating. If you are eating something and feel "was this really worth it?"something that does happen sometimes - then next time try to focus on that feeling to prevent another slip - unless you really feel it is worth it.
I cut my chocolate addiction by trading quantity for quality - I would buy 2 handmade chocolates instead of a bar of chocolate. It helped me to slow down while eating it too, and actually enjoy the tastes, texture etc... very like when you are on a diet and dip you finger into something naughty - it tastes wayyy better than eating a whole whatever it is. similar principle - you learn to really concentrate on how good it is when you nibble it slowly.
Also joining any weight loss club will help - the support, even if it is just a group of friends, can be a huge help. Best of luck :-)
