I just went to catch up on the latest breaking news of the day on Stuff.co.nz. This consists of; Art Green making his face brown for a Bollywood party, What Chrystal did next (re her crotch photo) and advice to John Key on how he should parent his son.
There are a couple of other stories but I am too bored to even glance at them.
I know as a little country we can't have continual newsworthy items and for that I am often grateful but surely we don't have to resort to this rubbish....

Ah, well then, instead of staying on the main page, you need to click on the Life & Style tab at the top, which gives you access to tabs for:
Love & Sex (e.g. key to happy love life? - Humility)
Well & Good (e.g. Not All Runners Are Skinny, Fatty Foods & Your Brain, The Health Cost of Self-Control, etc) (and this section has three more tabs to click on for Teach Me, Motivate Me, Inspire Me)
Food & Wine (Spiced Devil's Food Cake recipe, Three Ways With Pumpkin, My Sunday Dinner Party Menu, Mum of Crying Child Speaks Up) (and this section has four more tabs to click on for Recipes, Reader's Recipes, Drinks, Food News)
Parenting (e.g. Dr Seuss book arrives next week, Our first toileting trials, etc) (and this section has six more tabs to click on...)
Beauty (e.g. These beards are things of glory, How old is this model?)
Fashion (e.g. Beating cancer in fashion, Every woman should watch this)
Home & Property (e.g. Enid Blyton's cottage for sale, Garden tasks for this weekend)
Weddings (e.g. Rugby hardman's softer side, Introducing Alice & Jeremy)
CuteStuff (e.g. Marjorie's 100 years of memories, Hotel reunites traveller and stuffed dog)
Happy reading!!

Me too. My first port of call each day is The Guardian, and we also subscribe to The Times. I do look at The NZ Herald web site occasionally through the day in case there is breaking local news, but I get so incredibly annoyed at the prominence given to celebrity gossip that I am going there less and less.

I guess if you want US or UK-based news, I agree there are better sites but for NZ news and breaking news Stuff does the trick for me, ignoring poor editing as Jenna rightly points out - I guess the latter is the price we pay for immediacy as media outlets strive to be 'first' and proofreading is forgotten in the ensuing crush.
Remember also that an online news site is no different from a printed newspaper or magazine where attention-grabbing, controversial, topical and even trivial material takes centre stage, while the more serious stuff is found further in. ...and similarly you can choose to buy or not to buy.
Yes some people do regard gossip as news, just like some people see Masterchef as a cooking programme.

In my opinion, our 'National' (read Auckland) paper is no better than Stuff. They both have the same content, just presented in a different order and slightly different format. I just hate how journalism has sunk so low that editing is now defunct and what passes for good language and correct spelling is atrocious. Some of the headlines leave me really bewildered - they convey nothing of what the content is about. And since when did copying snippets from social websites constitute news?
Give us the facts, forget the fripperies. Give us an up-to-date photograph, not one of a similar event from 5 years ago. And bin the vidoes. I don't want the opinion some passer-by of what happened in a road accident.

Do we even have much investigative journalism in this country? Note, I wrote "much" as I think there may be some out there who would and do try but they are mostly smothered by all the tabloidal "cut and paste" type we see so often. If it is really interesting or newsworthy, then obtaining it from another source is fine but please separate the flippant from the actual news. Is it only in New Zealand? I don't think so.
I gave up subscribing to a daily newspaper ages ago and their websites are the same online as the printed variety, except when breaking news occurs, you just see that sooner. Of course we do buy some papers, just not everyday, it doesn't warrant the expense to subscribe.
Mum was a journalist back in the days long before television was around. She always said the editor wouldn't print anything if he couldn't be sure it was factual. For many years after she married and became a wife and mother, if anything happened in our region, her old editor would sometimes phone and ask if she knew something was true before he would allow it to go to print.
If you haven't already done so you could check out NZCity online. They have a range of links and information. If you want the "entertainment" section, that is there should you wish to view it.
I must be old fashioned, although I can enjoy some light entertainment I thought adults moved past the giggling behind the sheltershed stuff that some seem to think of as prime news.

What about television? I don't very often watch live tv... and happened to see the start of the Sunday program last night on TVNZ (I think that is the channel).. Isn't Sunday supposed to be a news/current affair show? The lead in segment, was interviewing Rachel Hunter and gasp, why did she leave Rod Stewart! - I think - because I only watched the first 10 seconds but the interview has made both front pages of Stuff and Auntie Herald.
I believe in reality the interview was timed as a promotion for a new tv show she will be fronting. I have nothing against her per se, and she looks wonderful and has always been beautiful, but to class that as news and current affairs????

I so agree. We do get served up a load of rubbish masquerading as news. So much is "celebrity" slanted; just about everyone who is mentioned in the gossip columns (yes, I am at times guilty of looking at them too if they stare at me) is a socialite or celebrity or star. Spare me!!! The people lap it up. It diverts them from the hard and sometimes uncomfortable issues confronting us. There really is a dumbing down happening. Who is asking the hard questions of the government and the opposition and reporting on them? As was mentioned in Katherine (sp?) Ryan's programme on National Radio this morning, the Prime Minister gets more attention from little sound bytes on a commercial station than from an address at a National Party conference. Well, I am ranting now. I must stop immediately but I can't help wondering what's happening to us. So sad. By the way, our TV got sold over 5 years ago and we don't miss it one bit. There are plenty of websites out there keeping us informed.

Marnie, thank you so much for your mention of NZCity online. I didn't know it existed and it's a breath of fresh air after having to swallow Yahoo's changed format homepage (which I detest and have told them so)...........and Stuff - (just as Helen has mentioned) - which is no better than Yahoo IMHO!). I too am all for real NEWS, not magazine gossip type news.....
And, if I may say so, Radio Talkback has turned NZer's into a lot of wingers and moaners. Now...............pounce on me for saying that for I realize I too have become a moaner and winger by merely having listened to it!
I also don't approve of radio stations ramming so called news down our ears every half hour, nor news headlines every quarter hour..............it drives me insane! No wonder a lot of NZer's are driven to rush, rush, rush.......
OK, I've gotten that off my chest!
And yes, I DO know I can change the Radio Station - and I do - music is sweet and calming!
Regards,
Dawn.
