You need to break the cycle, they leave a hormone marker where they cluster, and more will be drawn to that spot. So spray, vacuum, then clean the entire area, anywhere that the flies alive or dead have been. The hormone is fat based so you'll need really hot water and a degreasing cleaner or they'll just come back over time. If you have a real issue with them you can interupt their breeding cycle by using insecticide lawn prills on your grassed areas. They breed in the soil, and hatch when the weather warms up.

I have never heard of cluster flies & so I have just googled 'what are cluster flies' WOW I don't envy you one wee bit trying to get rid of them they look terrible. All I can say I am sorry for you & good luck. What a menace but it does say they are not bad for your health as they don't lay eggs on food. Even so.....

I have a wonderful game of tennis with the end of season flies here using one of those tennis-like racquets which gives an electrical shock and fries the flies when you hit them. Those flies just will not die if you fly spray them. Before the fly/flies bed down for the night in some dark corner of the room, I usually play my tennis game early evening when I have only one light on which draws the fly to it and makes it an easier target. One press of the little red button on the racquet handle as you hit your target and you can hear the fly fry. I usually shut my husband and grandchildren out of the room while I exhibit my tennis prowess to myself for fear of accidentally batting one of them and, well, you know what would happen next............. I can but recommend this piece of lethal equipment which is kept well out of reach of children when not in use.

Marylew, I'd be too scared to let my 3 grandsons get hold of it - I'm not sure that one of them wouldn't press the red button and bat another and give them a dreadful shock and/or burn. Maybe when they get a little older and I can trust them with it!
The racquet would make a good weapon against a burglar though - they wouldn't come back in a hurry.

Dawn.

Dawn, don't even think about giving it to the boys when they're older. The older they get, the more adventurous and inquisitive they become. Goodness knows what experiments they might undertake, on each other and other unsuspecting victims!

Wise words Lorna the racquet should be out of reach at all times. Maybe only under guided experimentation with one grandson at a time, on his own, swatting flies only - just so he understands the workings and consequences and it is no longer a piece of equipment that tempts them to find out what it does. To see sparks and hear the sizzle when a fly gets hit should be enough for each of them to learn how dangerous the instrument is.
Marnie, maybe I could attach a racquet to each of my extremities and practice my Kung Fu routines.........what a hoot..............the scene could become either very graceful or, (more likely) crude and unsophisticated!
