If you have a dishwasher, do you put everything in it or do you also hand wash a number of dishes everyday? I don't put plastics or wooden items in mine nor the saucepans and other stove top cookware but wash these by hand. I know people who never hand wash anything though so I am wondering what people here do.

My exceptions: non stick frypan, cast iron anything, crystal glasses, aluminium garlic press and ice cream scoop, good knives.
Often there isn't room for pots so they'll get wanted by hand, but I don't mind them going in it. Several are 18y old and still look and perform great.. but they are stainless steel so I would expect them to be ok in a dishwasher.
The only wooden things I have are wooden spoons and they go in and don't appear to have suffered. I wouldn't put in a wooden salad bowl or anything like that though.

I'm much the same as Jenna except for knives; they all go in as I have a good whetstone to sharpen them with. I'll also put my saucepans in IF there's room, which there mostly isn't, but pans are 48 years old, going back to when I first arrived in NZ and set up a new home from scratch. Still in excellent condition and have outlasted one or two smaller saucepans that I have bought over the years.

Pretty much everything except for wooden spoons, wooden chopping board, good knives, crystal & my grand mothers beautiful dishes. I put a bowl in once & it crazed I was so disappointed, never room for pots. I found from Bed Bath & Beyond dish mats & I really like them. They are a thicker absorbent cloth that is great for sitting your glasses, pots etc on to drain. I wouldn't bother with a dish rack any more as these are so good. Only $6.90 each & easy to put into cupboard without taking too much room.

I put in as much as will fit - except for my good cooking knives, some of my grandmothers bone handled knives and my good china with silver rims and also my royal dalton afternoon tea sets. I have inherited some from my grandmother, mother, as well as my own. When I look at them I often wish "afternoon and morning teas' were back in vogue with the pretty tablecloth and all the trimmings.
I guess I could make it happen instead of just thinking about it!

It's good to see that I am not the only one who has a few things that are hand washed. I probably could put more bigger items in at times but when I already have a sink full of water it just seems to make sense to do the mixing bowls and saucepans myself while I am at it and run the dishwasher the next night when it has more plates, cutlery, etc in it. The family get a bit grumpy with this policy when it is their turn to do the hand washing though.

I put as much as will fit in the dishwasher, other than delicate crystal and glasses. That includes pots and knives, chopping board and wooden spoons ( tho I don't use them much, prefer my all purpose Zyliss spatula stirring thing. My husband can fit much more into the dishwasher than I can! But then he hates hand washing more than me. Lyn V I will have to look out for those dish mats, sound good.

I bought some serving dishes in a recent Farmer's sale. They are plain white glazed (earthenware, I think) and on the back of the dishes it says that hand washing is recommended. I am inclined to put them in the dishwasher regardless. What do you think? I should have checked before I bought but, unfortunately ,I didn't.
