Tin Foil.
Posted by marylew
Having just cleaned an older oven where the base of the oven was very hard to clean,I wan't to put Tinfoil under the bottom element. Is this still acceptable?. I am sure I read a few years back that you should not put tinfoil at the bottom of the oven, but I cannot remember the reasoning behind it.Any ideas please?

And there are ovens that have the lower element under the sealed base and with these you should never put aluminium foil or those specially made aluminium oven liners. Having said that, nobody has ever said why we shouldn't do this. That's one of my pet peeves: an instruction saying never do this, or you must do that without giving a reason.
I've often wanted to line the base part of my George Foreman grilling machine but it says I mustn't do that. Why not? The special coating has long gone but the machine still works. I just don't want to cook on the flaky bits that are left.

I was a school girl when I heard mention of not putting tin foil under the stove elements - something to do with deflection of the heat. That's all I remember, but thinking about it, maybe it overheated the element (if such a thing could happen!), or maybe it had an effect on the wiring. One thing was that I didn't ever do it! But you can buy the specially made tin foil inserts which slip under the stove elements - so that makes a mockery of my childhood story!
