Occasionally you hear in the news of animals with rings of plastic stuck on their bodies somewhere, often their necks (or dogs with collar cruelty and neglect, which is another different story...). With this in mind, I always cut through any plastic rings before I put them in the rubbish, no matter how big or small (e.g. the rings of plastic that separate from a lid as you open them for the first time, e.g. Vegemite and Marmite jars, Sanitarium peanut butter jars).
In the UK, seals are found with fishing nets stuck around their necks but also plastic ring frisbees.(don't look if you'd rather not - it's really sad and awful) [www.bbc.com] [www.bbc.com]
I checked out whether frisbee rings have been banned at all (they should be...) but all I could find was a UK petition that some kind soul has started but only managed 112 signatures [petition.parliament.uk]
Anyway, it would be good if a few more people were mindful of this and cut through plastic rings before putting in the rubbish, and buy a solid frisbee rather than a ring one.....

My husband was always very particular about the rings around the Orange Juice when we were out on the high seas. A new bottle was like dynamite, to be treated with caution. This new bottle of Charlie's, that morning he opened and somehow, at the exact same time the tea cosy that his beloved mother had knitted for him when he left the safety of UK way way back in 1964, caught fire in the cabin where he was keeping the teapot of tea warm on a low fire. The offending hard ring flew over the starboard side and into the high tide, along with his special b/fast cup he was holding, enjoying his first brew of the dawning day. It was all my fault somehow so I promised that when the tide had gone down a little I'd go overboard and retrieve not only the ring which would have floated away to Never Never Land, but also the tea cup that didn't drip.Terrifically special non dripping tea cup you should all think about owning one day long before your teeth drop out.
The time arrived. I could see the bottom of the sea bed and the cup. It was still winter so master instructed me to don his very own winter weight wet suit. I only had a three quarter summer job and not really up to these chilly conditions, which showed he did care about me on some level. Over I went and immediately rebounded back into the boat. This wet suit seemed to have amazing bouncing capabilities I was only to happy to explore, but, the the cup was moving further away as the boat was swinging another way. Over I went again with a grapnel and taking a deep breath, managed to retrieve the cup, but not the OJ ring. I was not given any Browny points.
