Old Jack

When our son's wife passed away, he went to live and work overseas - and needed a home for his dog..So who do you turn to but Mum and Dad.
Dad was quite keen but Mum was not at all keen as I was aware of how much hair he constantly dropped.
For 10 years he has had a walk every day in the forest where he met and socialised with other dogs - and hubby got to know the other dog walkers.
I grumped and grizzled about the never ending flow of hair that seemed to weave itself into every nook and cranny, and how the dog seemed to be in command of the household.
Today at the age of 15 he was put to sleep by a caring and lovely Vet. Hubby is fine - although he will really miss his mate, and I have been snivelling all afternoon. I can’t figure myself out sometimes!

I really understand you, Ali. I grumble whenever I sweep up the hair our cocker seems to be constantly shedding. She is a rather difficult and anxious dog but she came to us when she was four years old and certain habits seem to be I grained. She is now nearing 12 and we should have her for a while yet with good care. However I have sworn that she will not be replaced after she dies of old age. Time will tell though because dogs are such good company and with her needing at least one good walk a day she gets me out of the house and exercising as well.

Ali you both have had a perfectly understandable reaction. Minnie has just turned 15 and whilst all appears well - apart from her cataracts, deafness, lack of agility and her walks are now down to the corner only rather than the long 45 minute walks we used to enjoy - she is in overall good health. But it hit home when we visited the vets for her annual shots and for the vet to say I hope to see you next year, and then realised what she had said and said but of course we will.
They truly become a part of the family and you are mourning a family member.
Hugs to all of you

Ohhhh soooo sorry to hear about Jack.
Animals are amazing parts of our families. Our cat is over 18 years old and showing her age, shes not great at cleaning her fluffy coat, waits for us to carry her up the stairs, is fussy with food in her old age and sleeps ALOT!
We love her so much and will really miss her when it's time to do the same. Im dreading that day. Shes been through so many stages of my life with me and now the kids adore her.
Are you going to get another dog?
Vanessa

Thanks Vanessa45. Not at the moment, dogs are such a tie, unlike cats who can be fed by the neighbourhood kids. One of my workmates told me that the cost of raising a dog from wo to go is $26k. My hubby is nearer 80 than 70 and told me the other day he would get another dog if he was on his own. Wonder if I should be worried! Ha.
It maybe a coincidence but we have never seen so many ads and programmes that feature dogs at the moment.

Just an update - we both are feeling so rested after getting some good night's sleep. It was like having a baby in the house as Jack would bark to go out a couple of times a night - we just got used to broken sleep.
This week I used the D vacuum cleaner for the 5th time on the areas in the house he favoured to sleep. Aha.....not much more hair left now! But I looked down at the fleece jacket I wear when reading in bed - and there was a Jack hair - he's going to be around for a while yet!

Oh Ali W, they do leave a hole when they go, don't they? Probably why I don't have a four legged friend anymore - such a wrench when their time is up and I always get so attached, even if I grizzle a bit about picking up the poop, and the icky gnawed bones.
There is a lovely Kipling poem about dogs here, but warning - it's a bit of a tear-jerker, to me anyway.

And this is what I wrote a short while after Ollie died.
Dog Day Night
Your absence fills each day
and my hands stroke the air
where you were.
At night I dream you speak:
‘May I have a cup of tea,’ you say;
nothing momentous,
just a dog—speaking.
even with my help
the four steps down
were two too many;
you fell and lay there
in the way
(not one of your usual places)
beyond your habitual courtesy
of, ‘Excuse me,’ and, ‘After you.’
For three hours
we stepped around and over you
deciding what to do.
I sat against your warm back
while you chased rabbits
or yellow Minis
(never any other car).
When the vet came late at night
you struggled to get up
to greet him,
‘How nice to see you,’
‘How kind of you to come,’
until I said
you didn’t have to be polite,
not tonight—not anymore.
