For years I have written the word rose and hoping that the context would show whether it was a wine or a flower and then suddenly someone explained how to add an accent and I am delighted.
For others who don't know, all you need to do is hold down the relevant key e.g if you hold down the letter e you will be presented with a number of accent choices to pop above your e.
It is the rose difference that I commonly used but pleased I now know where to find them.
Does anyone else have any keyboard tips that the rest of us may not know about?

On an iPad there are some hidden tricks. The one I use the most is - on the bottom row there is a key second white from the right which has the comma and exclamation mark. If you put you finger on it and wait, another character appears. It is for when you want to make a word like its read correctly with the little accent before the s. Same for the y,e and u for foreign language.

Helen, I'm assuming your tip is for Apple devices. For those who don't compute with fruit, as usual in Windows there are several ways to do it - the alt codes Marnie mentioned, the Windows character map, keyboard shortcuts, or switching to a different keyboard language layout that includes the accent. In Word you add an accent by selecting Insert/Symbol and then picking the symbol you want. Another sneaky way to do it that's not an official one is if you see the symbol you want online, you can just copy and paste it into your document.

Ahh Carolyn sorry I wasn't really thinking that it was fruit centric.
My husband is the non fruit user in the house. He loathes everything about it.
One of our teens has just lost her phone (since recovered) and she was appalled when Ed offered her his old Samsung.
There has certainly been a lot of brain washing going on, in many other countries android phones are really popular.

On my Samsung J8 if I hold down any of the number keys, I am presented with lots of fractions. Can be useful when typing a reciped to have these. Hold down the number key and the fractions appear above the number, then slide your finger to the fraction you want Lots of keys have this hold and slide function, you just need to experiment to see which ones your particular phone has.
I must admit I prefer using my laptop for doing anything that involves typing and I have a whole lot of these codes saved on a page and OneNote in case I can't remember them. The most common one I use is é, which I get by holding down the Ctrl key and typing 0233. This only works with a keyboard that has a number pad. The numbers in the top row don't do the same. If you want to find out how to do them, type in Keyboard Symbols or Special Characters in the search bar of your browser and you'll be presented with many options.

I was chatting with someone last night and we were talking about using the accents. I tried it out on my trusty old pc and it didn't work using the key pressing method. He could use it but said he was on an android phone. Later I tried it on my android tablet and the key pressing method worked well.
The more I learn about technology (and the best tips come from others) the more I realise how much faster things change.
I am not quite a newbie because I remember sitting on the lounge floor with my two children on a very early home computer. They were writing little programmes even then. One of those children is now a father and he is marvelling at how much his boys know more than he does about technology.

Helen, although of course it's just a matter of personal preference, I'm with your husband on this - and you might be surprised to know that in fact Android has 55% market share in NZ too!. But I've realised I made a much bigger mistake as because I sit in front of a PC all day, and am in the IT industry, I forget that for most people it's screen devices, not keyboards, that they're using and this is what you were talking about. Oops! Android has the same thing of showing accents with a long press. I think we've now covered pretty much every piece of technology.
