After reading an article on one of our news sites about small towns in NZ that could really do with the visitor's $, I thought it an interesting conversation to continue with.
We do tend to head to places that are on the tourist map, Wanaka, Russell, The Mount etc...
but what other hidden gems are out there that you would recommend us visiting? These places would benefit from our spending and some offer unique experiences.
When I think about my home town of Hokitika, it is tourism that now keeps the town afloat.
The large psychiatric hospital has long gone as has the telephone exchange and other areas of employment.
What keeps this town ticking are the people who drive around the south island.
It would be good to find some other places that are worth a visit that people perhaps overlook.

We have just come back from the Waitaki valley - hydro electric dams, fossils, weird rock formations, rock art, walking, biking, boating on the lakes.spectacular hills and within reach of Pukaki, Tekapo, Mt Cook, Wanaka if you want something more touristy.. A lovely quiet break at this time of year. A bit different in the summer holidays.

My passport exires in May 2021 so my next overseas trip ( after Singapore in Feb) must be no later than October/November 2020. At 74 I'm not going to bother renewing my passport, but instead I will start exploring NZ, something I haven't done much of. I've only been to the South Island once, to Nelson for a week. I think I will start my NZ Adventures with a trip on the Trans Alpine Scenic Train, and if I enjoy that, I will follow on with the other train holidays on offer.
