Someone told me a while back that she was talking to some friends about an uncommon item and then a wee while later there were advertisements on her Facebook page for that product. She was adamant she didn’t search for it, but had her phone with her.
Just now hubby and I were talking about scientific experiments that have gone quiet - I said “what about that large circular tunnel in Europe that they have spent millions on to prove some theory”. Neither of us could remember the name so I went to google and typed in Large and before I got any further the drop down list had Hadron Collider on it.
Mmmmmmm

As I am massively paranoid about online privacy, of course I don't have Al*xa or anything like that, but I also have the microphone on my Android phone disabled. If you can see the message about saying "OK Google" to turn on the digital assistant, it means Google is listening for that phrase all the time. And Google were caught recording and transcribing the audio - this was supposedly anonymised and done for the purposes of improving their AI, but I just don't like it. I can easily live without a voice assistant for the sake of knowing a huge corporation isn't spying on me in my own home. (Other corporations are no better than Google in this respect either.)
Edited to add: You don't even have to be talking to the voice assistant for Google (or others) to be recording you. Sometimes there is something called a "false accept" which leads to them recording you without you having given the wake command, so it could just be an ordinary conversation you're having. That completely creeps me out.

A few weeks ago I attended a lecture series on Artificial Intelligence and it was interesting to hear one of the lecturers say that he would never ever have an automated home like Heather described because your privacy would be seriously compromised. He also mentioned that as soon as he retires he will ditch anything the big companies offer for searching and communicating. He sounded quite worried about our privacy that is constantly being compromised.

I was talking to a workmate about this today - she likes to play a game on her phone that is like lolly smash ( CC). She says it has different levels and you have to complete a level before you can move forward. Every now and then she gets really frustrated when she can’t complete a level and blurts out “I am sick of this $&*# game” and just like that, the screen clears and she is up to play the next level.
Just saying.......

I read an interesting article about Hey Alexa and Hey Siri for in home technology - closing blinds, switching on lights etc etc. A researcher asked "Hey Alexa/Siri are you listening in on my conversations". Hey Alexa provided absolutely no response and was conveniently deaf, whereas Siri did come back with some response (can't remember what). In his eyes if someone wanted these he thought Siri would be the best option, but better not to have.
I have Siri on my watch, phone and iPad. I can be talking away to someone without pushing buttons or saying Siri, and she will pipe up with 'I am not sure I understand that' or similar.
We definitely are being listened to but not only with these devices. I can be using either my desktop computer or laptop looking up accommodation reviews on TripAdviser and nekk minnit Facebook is full of accommodation deals in that city. Or I can ask Dr Google a question and advertising on sites plus FB will revolve around my medical question
Big Brother is watching you (or that should read Big Sister)

My son was telling me that he and a few mates went to a bar in downtown Auckland recently to watch a tennis match. The following day one of them received a message on his phone asking him to give feedback on his experience and rate the establishment. He said that his mate hadn't even used his phone while he was there, he just had it with him. Spooky...
Edited to add: yes I agree with you Helen about advertising from on-line stores appearing ad nauseum after you've visited them. It is particularly annoying if you have actually purchased the item so what is the point of advertising after the event?
Regards,
Barbara Anne

I unashamedly admit to using an Ad Blocker and it makes my browsing experience thousands of times better than without it. The same as the mute button on my TV - it gets used every time ads come on. I can't remember when it became so bad, but the main channels on TV seem to have 5 minutes of programme and 6 minutes of ads. The one thing that is annoying me at the moment, and I'm finding hard to control, is the number of pointless animations that accompany news items, especially in the NZ Herald. There seem to be giphys galore in many of the articles - it's as if we're a bunch of kindergarteners who are fascinated by these pointless annoyances. I have been having trouble finding an efficient animaton blocker but it's a hard slog. I have one, but it's not always effective.
Oh dear, I'm sounding so angry. I'm really quite placid, maybe due to my success in blocking much of these petty annoyances!
