For the last few weeks I have noticed an advertisement flash up for a brief second every time I open my personal Gmail account - it doesn't happen with our joint address.
It shows a pretty Christmas tree with presents and two little children and the logo of the big department store that starts with F.
I will be curious to see if it is still there after Christmas.
Is this subliminal advertising, or have a clicked something that has sort of saved it?
No one else has mentioned that they get it.

I use gmail and don't get that, but then, I'm using an ad-blocker. I use Chrome web-browser with AdBlock Ultimate and you have no idea how much more pleasant it is not being bombarded with thousands of ads every day. If I want information on any particular product, I look it up on google.
Another Chrome extension I use is Stop Animations: if there's something like those annoying giphys that jiggle around or those ticker-tape type ads that roll across the screen continually, I just have to hit the escape button and it stops the annoying animation.

We are spending time with our son and his partner, so I thought I would ask about the problem. He leaned over, double clicked the home button, then swiped up to show me I had about a zillion apps open! He patiently closed each one - voila....problem gone! And here I had been switching off the machine, closing all the tabs and still the problem persisted! Note to self to check if apps are open when the iPad is not responding, is slow or doing odd things!

If any of you who are 50+ and using smart-phones or tablets and are unsure of how it works, it's (and your) capabilities, can I encourage you to join your local SeniorNet group where you can learn the ins and outs of your technology and how to use virus protection, etc.
I use mainly my laptop but I also have a smartphone and tablet, all of which I update regularly. My laptop is set to advise when a security or system upgrade is ready but I can choose when to download it, which I usually do within 24 hours. For my phone and tablet, I have a reminder set every Wednesday and Sunday to update my apps, and again I have a notification when the system has an upgrade. I like to do these things myself rather than automatically because I can see what changes/improvements have been made, but you can set your devices to update automatically.
I also have anti-virus protection on all my devices, plus a password manager, and these things surely make life so much easier. Oh, and I mustn't forget my automatic back-up to an external hard drive attached to my laptop. I'm eternally grateful that I have this set up as last November the hard-drive in my laptop died and I had to have a new one installed. It was easy to transfer everything I had onto the same laptop with a new hard-drive. Thank you SeniorNet for teaching me about these simple measures to give me peace of mind.
