Because I don't want to waste energy focussing on the businesses I used to support but now am now feeling irritated by (e.g. a supermarket where I spent $1500 for charity groceries and they offered to sell me bags to pack groceries in at 25c each - grrr), I am trying instead to focus on those doing good in this time of uncertainty.
I am trying to spend my $$ with those that I wish to support.
Foodchain is a family business that usually supplies the restaurant trade but needs to diversify so have set up foodchainathome.co.nz, I plan to place my first order with them in the next day or so.
They are fairly Auckland centric sorry but do deliver to Hamilton Central and Coromandel.
What businesses are you supporting in your area? The businesses that you are hoping to help ride through this storm.
PS - the $1500 was Guardian Angels money not my own personal funds, I know we all have our own charities but in the pre lockdown time when I did this spending, many supermarket owners were making thousands and thousands per day.

Helen, Your spending, plus that of your organisation would be huge compared to mine, as my children have flown the nest but it still irks me. I take my own bags and each of the "duopoly supermarkets" have cardboard cartons should I need them. Not so long ago one of the supermarkets would stamp a card for every bag of your own that was used. When it was full the Christmas Club would credited, I think it was $5. I cannot be sure but I don't think they still do it anymore. Unfortunately, I am out of the Foodchain area.
Thay are not the only ones that offer to sell a bag for whatever I have bought, regardless of the cost. They are one one of our larger chain stores and. I find I am supporting them less and less. I am not unreasonable and I will take my own bag most of the time but I always refuse to buy one of theirs even if it means I am walking out clutching lingerie and other purchases.
As for any price gouging, that is a whole new topic.

Thanks for that link, Helen - I would love to support more local businesses. Just as things got serious I signed up for both Ooooby and Foodbox for fruit and veges (we eat a lot of veges!). Foodbox in particular I was happy to support as normally they supply the restuarant trade and so a lot of their suppliers had spare product. They offered a dizzying array of boxes but I started with a big vege box as we're still getting fruit sent from Cromwell. I got one box, then I happened to go and look at their site and they have now gone from a huge number of boxes to just one style, the "Just Feed Me" box which has fruit, veges, meat, pasta etc for a week and has a lot of stuff I don't need in it. I had a look at my account page, wondering if since I hadn't heard from them they were still supplying existing customers with the boxes they'd ordered, but nothing at all was showing as a next delivery. I know these are difficult times, but I wasn't very happy that they'd cancelled my delivery without a word. Luckily I also have my Ooooby box, but imagine if someone were relying entirely on their Foodbox arriving to actually eat and not even knowing it wasn't coming. So I would love to support some *other* local businesses.

I'm keeping it local, have signed up for vege delivery from the fruit and vege shop on the corner, run by two young woman with a focus on ethical/environmental issues. I'm currently awaiting my first delivery.
I'm also getting meat delivered from a local business that specialises in local product.
In both cases we have a personal link to the staff who own or work in the businesses so trying to put our money (now decreased to 80% of usual) where it can do the best work.

Getting back to Helen's comment about being charged for bags, the charge for bags is imposed in an attempt to get people into the habit of bringing their own bags and not needing to buy them but sometimes, as in this case, that is not appropriate and some discretion should have been applied.
That said, from what I am seeing, I don't believe that 20c or 25c is enough to deter people and I wonder whether NZ should look at applying the UK model whereby any profit from the sale of bags is donated to charity. That way, they could charge more, say 50c which would be a deterrent to many, and those who still chose to purchase a bag would do so in the knowledge that they were donating to a good cause.
Regards,
Barbara Anne
