A little smell in the kitchen is normal, no doubts there, but I'm tired of my hair, skin, clothes, the whole room stinking like crazy every time I cook sauces and other yummy stuff. What do you guys do in this case, any tips? My range hood is somewhat powerful, but it doesn't do the job OK apparently, and I can't sit with the window open all the time either because of drafts.

Windows open isn't a good idea indeed, if there's a draft, you end up sick at one point, so it's not worth it. Lighting up a candle throughout the cooking process is somewhat effective, but you'll still have to wash your hair afterward most likely if the food you make smells pungent and strong. An air purifier could also work, models with activated carbon filters are specifically aimed at removing odors, including cooking smells. Oh, coffee beans are great at absorbing odors too, have some bowl laying around the kitchen. Another trick would be to boil lemon peels and ground ginger while you cook, the smell is pretty strong and helps neutralize odors. There are other creative ways to get rid of this problem, but it's a shame that the range hood doesn't do its job right. Maybe in combination with a filter unit it'll do better, or if you combine the hood on with lighting up a candle on the counter, who knows.

Lifehacker gives a method of boiling 2 cinnamon sticks to remove cooking odours. I cooked pizza last night and having the pizza stone, and oven as high as it gets, and a hard to clean grill part of my oven, it gave off a terrible smoky smell and had to open windows and doors to outside. I still have some dough in fridge and will test this method tomorrow when I make another pizza. I make sure bedroom doors are shut before I cook as to me I hate cooking odours when trying to sleep especially onion.

When I have burnt something, or cooked a curry, the only way I can get the stink out is to open as many windows as possible and hope for a good breeze. I don't know how these candles work but they must surely mask the smell temporarily rather than eliminate it. I have windows open in my house all year round depending on which way the wind is coming. Sometimes I do have to close up everything if the weather is particularly foul, but not that often and I live in a house with a lot of big windows. The drafts whistling through, haven't made me sick yet - touch wood.
