I've just purchased a lovely vintage cashmere cardigan from overseas, and it has a tiny hole (c 3mm) in one sleeve. I'm imagining all I could do would be to darn it as invisibly as possible with something like non-worsted merino so that I can use just one strand - it's machine-knitted with very fine yarn. I'll need to buy the yarn here in Nelson, so that I can match the colour, and we only have one specialist wool shop which doesn't have a huge range. Any suggestions welcome!

Some years ago I bought a twin set from Smith & C....cashmere wool, it was beautiful so soft etc but it had a very small hole in it so they did a wee repair by putting a white circle on the inside with a blind mend on top, you could never see it . It lasted many years but because of being Merino it started to wear thin eventually & the moths loved it so be careful. There are professionals out there but ask Smith & Caug...if they can help. Otherwise depending where it is put little rosettes or similar here & there to make it look like they are meant to be there. Enjoy it.

Many thanks for these suggestions. Sadly our specialist wool shop with its very knowledgeable staff has gone out of business, but I found I had some 2 ply wool which was an exact colour match, so a friend who is an embroiderer mended it for me, and it's now quite hard to see. I have the book 'Modern mending', which gives instructions for embroidering flowers etc over a darn or patch to turn it into a decorative feature, but it wouldn't have been right for this garment.
