I have watched quite a bit of television lately and the Save The Children ads come on asking for $5.00 a month.Do any of you members give as I would like to but I am a bit worried that the money might go to administration as I heard this has happened years ago.Any thoughts please as I am keen to help.

You can check where charities are allocating their funds on this website: [charities.govt.nz]. In Consumer NZ's recent article on giving to charities, they make the point that because of the nature of their work, some charities will have larger overheads than others. This organisation: [www.reliefaid.org.nz] had coverage on Radio NZ when an interview from August 2020 was re-played, and Director Mike Seawright made the point that hardly any of the money donated to them goes to administration.

Marylew I haven't see the advert you mentioned as I rarely watch television - is it an NZ initiative or overseas?
Jenna is right about charitable giving being a minefield. Friends of mine have been involved in sponsoring an individual NZ child - I don't know the details but it seems to me that a targeted approach would be a better use of money in this kind of situation than a broad-brush one. I'm not sure that you actually get to meet the child, but I know my friends get updates and know what their money is being used for. Others may know more about this.
Just my two bob's worth.
Regards,
Barbara Anne

I understand how we now need to be wary when we hear of some charities where the donations don't seem to get to those who need it most. It is a shame because there are so many who need help.
I think Save the Children has an office in Wellington but I am not sure if it is up to each country to promote the organisation.

Barbara Anne mentioned about sporsoring an individual NZ child. Once I belonged to a group that has branches in most towns and cities in NZ. We sent donations for an individual person within a charity. (Let's call her Jane, not her real name) One day we met with our sister group in a different town. The topic of donations was mentioned and we found that we were both donating to Jane. We checked with the charity. Apparently, they used the name of Jane to all who donated, with the funds being spread out within all within that charity.
I hope my comment doesn't sound cynical, it's not meant to. We did continue to send donations to the charity but we said we wanted clarity and honesty.

I think the well known charities would be fine.
We sponsor a girl from Kenya. We had a bad run for a while with our sponsored children moving away from the project's area (a good thing as parents going for work) and in one case a boy who wouldn't study was removed from sponsorship. Because of this they gave us a three year old to sponsor (in the hope the sponsorship would last longer). We are still sponsoring her and she is now aged 19, still at school and is going to be a nurse. A great outcome on both sides I think!
