30% off to card holders... November 12, 2004 01:05AM |
Am I the only one who feels incensed by this stand taken by a formerly NZ owned department store? As I understand it, you apply for another credit card, the company holds all your personal/financial details, and unless you are willing to do this, your money isn't welcome if you pay upfront rather than use credit? Talk about Big Brother!
Does anyone know who owns, this company now, it used to be a family oriented business didn't it?
Sorry, gripe over...

My big gripe with this type of selling is that I feel since they run these so called specials so often, that their original prices must be marked up to compensate for the continous sales. So as probably like alot of NZ ers I don`t but anything until it has come on sale in these particualr shops.

Yeah i know the feeling, i went there yesterday, for the first time for months.
I tried on some stuff, (which has to be the firsst time in months as well) and went up to the counter, and the lady said can i have your card please..... blank look from me.....
she then said farmers card please.
i said uh nuh im not farmers card, and the look she gave me, and she then said i wont get any discount cos im not farmers. i hadnt even realised it was discounted again anyway.
but then said if i fill out a form then and there i can get discount....
Im like what? are you talking about is cash or eftpos no good any more...
she was not impressed. i got my stuff and left. and i wasnt rude or impolite just bewildered....
also doesnt help weve had HP's with them but no thats not good enough they want details for a card.....
I rang them up a year ago about ordering something, still havent heard from them...
why have they changed so much? i really am sick of sales.......
and the service is hohum at the best of times i feel.

I agree, Beetle, the whole atmosphere of "Farmers" has changed, there's never any staff around to ask questions about the items they are selling, and those at the Point of sale...checkouts are less than friendly. I remember the old staff who used to work at our local store were so knowledgeable and nice to deal with. Remember the free bus service in Auckland to the Farmers store? We were customers then, not mere $$$signs!
Pinned on the wall the garage where we take our vehicles for servicing etc.

And now Farmers are harrassing, by phone, card holders like me who ignored the latest crap sent by mail to entice me to take out life insurance. When I said I wasn't interested the caller said, was it cost or cover I didn't want, and I repeated I wasn't interested. She carried on right over the top of me so I hung up. I also object to the huge amount of advertising material which comes through the post. It is unnecessarily bulky, expensive glossy paper, which must cost a fortune to produce. I'm close to telling them where to put their account.

I asked a staff member last time I was in there and she told me that the stores are owned by a husband and wife and the finance side of it is Fisher & Paykel. How it works I don't know.
Also be aware that you can no longer pay your Farmers account with gift vouchers. In the past if they had a cardholders night and there was something we needed, I used to put it on my card to get the discount, phone up our Hot Points centre and get vouchers to cover the cost. Not any longer so I doubt if my card will be used in the future.
I was phoned about their life insurance and when I said no thanks I was asked "Why not". Grrrrr.

I told them years ago where to put there card, in a nice way, they are no longer the "family Firm" I was accustomed to as my kids were growing up.
You're right, it's all $$$$, to heck with service. And the staff are now just counter hoppers and money takers.......not tought anything about the stock. Checkout operaters, in other words. Sad in a way.

I don't have a Farmers card and always tell them I don't require one when asked to fill out any forms. I have nothing against the Farmers Card, but the form is quite detailed with financial information required, and I can never be bothered trying to figure it all out. I pay by credit card (a normal bank one) and I have never had any scowls, or dirty looks. I quite like Farmers - we don't have a huge amount of shops in our town and they stock well priced, good quality goods especially in the children's clothing ranges. I was aware of card holders evenings and am quite happy to miss out on special discounts offered only to card holders. The staff in our Gisborne store are also reasonably helpful going by retail store standards (which have slipped right across the retail sector in my opinion).

I must be lucky, I have had my card for many years and because they bought out a previous department store took over the customers as well so never had any forms to fill out. I find it difficult at times to find a staff member to find the fitting rooms as they are all at the counter serving so sometimes dont bother. Must say I like Jacqui E, Newports for my retail therapy.

I haven't had any problems with Farmers, have had and used their card for years. Even the phone call I got about insurance was polite and when I said I was not interested, the lady simply wished me a pleasant evening and hung up.
Having compared the forms for various institutions re applying for credit/debit cards, they all require the same information, Farmers being no more intrusive than any others. It is their money they are risking afterall, and I suspect the information required is governed by legislation anyway.
They are definitely not the only company in my area to charge delivery fees.
However, they have never been known for service in this area, dating way back through several name changes and owners. But lack of service in most retail areas seems to be the norm now. Perhaps the level of pay is reflected in the level of service?

As a Farmers employee I am concerned by some of the comments placed here. I have always prided myself on my customer service and my product knowledge. If anyone feels they have not received good service, let the relevant store know. There are customer comment forms available, and the managers treat any comments seriously.
The company is now privately owned by David & Anne norman who own Pascoes Jewellers. The finance company is owned by Fisher & Paykel and Farmers, along with many other well known companies, uses them for their financial services.
I am sorry if anyone feels disadvantaged by not being able to access discounts on "Cardholder Days", but these are days where Farmers cardholders are recognised. There are prominent signs throughout the stores on these days which we trust customers are able to readily see.
No deliveries are free from any company. Freight charges have to be covered, but some companies only charge the actual customer who has something delivered. Other companies load the cost on to every item thus giving the perception of "free delivery".
I hope this clears a few things.

Hi,
I tend to find the staff much the same as anywhere else, mostly friendly with the odd bad apple.
I don't have a problem at all with them holding Card Holder's sale evenings. I don't have a card myself, and I've never had any sales assistants turn their nose up at Eftpos, and sales are available to non-card holders often enough.
Besides. I go to the cardholder nights with a friend, who is a cardholder, and get the bargains that way if I want to
I like what Farmers is doing recently with the branding, and the introduction of some nicer labels is overdue.

I visited the Tauranga branch of the Farmers today, and purchased things in two departments. I couldn't speak highly enough of the service I received. Both assistants were extremely helpful and pleasant, and one gave the best service and helpful advice that I think I have ever received.
We live near a small rural town, and I find the staff in the shops there very friendly and helpful - perhaps the slightly slower pace of life helps.
When we do go to Tauranga for some shopping, I find most of the shops are pleasant and helpful. Apart from the odd exception, I couldn't say that when we lived in Auckland. The shop staff here, being so friendly and helpful was one of the first things I noticed when we left Auckland.
You certainly want to go back to the places that give good service.
Heather
