Out and About in Auckland

Hi there,

I have a 15 month old daughter and as a food lover love going out and about in Auckland to nice places to eat and have a latte etc. However, some places don't seem to like me when I turn up with the little one - can you all let me know great familiy friendly places to eat out and any that may have a wee area where the adorable one can stretch her legs or play in a sandpit etc.

I know of one that has just opened in the Benson Road Shops in Remuera called The Maple Room - fantastic (albeit smallish) courtyard and amazing food. Even have a large blackboard and chalk for kids to be artistic!

Looking forward to hearing ideas.

Cheers

Steph

hi Steph i live in timaru so i have limited knowedge. But about three years ago i went to the whitcoulls cafe in the Botany town Centre. That was located next to the kids part of the book shop and was very kid friendly and i thought it was quite pleasant.

There's one on Dominion Road - in the same block as Loveridge (?) wine shop - it's a great cafe - great coffee and has a very child friendly backyard. Sorry I can't tell you what it's called, or the street names....

Buterfly Creek out by the airport is fantastic. There is an outside play area, train for littlies to ride on, mini farm, lovely pond area and quite a lot of variety in their menu to suit all ages and tastes. Definitely a place to go to!
Steph I am interested that you say the Maple Room is good. I frequent the BRD daily for my latte fix but maybe should poke my nose into the Maple Room.
Did you notice what brand of coffee they serve?

Helen, I meant to tell you that day of the foodlovers store, we did call into BRD afterwards, and it was great. Coffee was yum and food, mmmmmmm - I had the smoked chicken & brie risotto stack - to die for !! Thanks for the recommendation

I think that the one Lynley is thinking of might be called Barretta Famiglia at 338 Dominion Road, Mt Eden. It has high chairs, a sandpit and a children's menu. Does this sound right Lynley??

Another website worth looking at is www.kidsfriendlynz.com it has a few places around Auckland that are child-friendly.

Plus we have just used it for our holiday down to Levin (lower North Island) and it was great, as it covers the whole of the NZ.

PS I know you don't need it now - but Levin has an awesome playground from 18 month olds to teenages. After two hours playing there, mum and dad wanted to go - not the kids!

On a slightly different slant... Heading to Ak for a 'Trade' do, but combining it with 2 sessions at the canine hydrotherapy centre in Albany (Dog jacuzzi, for dog recovering from major leg surgery). Haven't been to Albany for centuries, are there any dog walking areas in the vicinity? How about dog-friendly cafe`s...outside of course?
Thanx
