Melbourne Farmers Market

We have been home a few days after a visit to Melbourne, discovered a Farmers market which is held each Friday 12 noon till 6pm, sited on the walkway between Federation Square and the river. There were lots of temptations to sample--- cherries and strawberries picked that morning, cheeses etc. So,if you are visiting Melbourne you may find it's worth a visit.

Hi Jeanette

What other goodies did you find. We are off to Melbourne/Adelaide for 3 weeks on the 27th and am looking for things to do as we have just discovered that cricket is being played at the MCG so guess who has to go to watch Oz play Sri Lanka?? I dont think so. Would rather do something else that I enjoy.

I guess that is wont be operating over the xmas new year period, but worth a venture to see

Hello Helen,
We have been away from home again, hence delay to reply.
If you are not familiar with Melbourne, once off the plane, there is a stand on the left as you walk towards the Duty Free shop and passport control, with Visitors guide to Melbourne booklets ( free ) contains a very handy map. If you enjoy shopping, you will have a great time looking around the shops: Myers and David Jones are side by side, main entry on Bourke Street Mall. David Jones menswear is opposite, the Foodhall is in the basement, take escalator down. This is worth a visit--can buy refreshments down there. There are interesting Arcades to explore, if you enjoy craft work, visit Lincraft, walk through an arcade off Bourke st mall, before crossing Little Collins st,look up you will see the Lincraft sign, take escalator up, the shop is on two levels. Also in that block of shops is a Crabtree & Evelyn shop. From Myers ( first floor ) it is possible to walk through to Melbourne Central undercover, very handy on a wet or very hot day.
The City Circle Tram is a good way to reach various places of interest, can get on and off as you please, it is free--a great service. You will see it's route marked on map in the guide. Victoria Market is worth a visit. On a Sunday a tram ride to St Kilda to see the cake shops with their wonderful displays, can't recall the name of the street, but it is as far as the tram goes. Then there are the Fitzroy and Carlton gardens.

To continue; there is so much to see and do in Melbourne, i always run out of time. Want to go to the Victoria Market next visit,as i missed it this time. There is the Southbank precinct and the newly opened Newquay area. These are a few ideas, hope you will enjoy your visit , I am an enthusiast for shopping in Melbourne.

Thanks for that Irene.
Helen C.B. there are wine tours available, or will you be doing those in Adelaide?? If you are interested, google and search for wine tours melbourne there are several to choose from, some with pickup from hotel. There are always the museums, art galleries and several public gardens and of course Captain Cook's cottage. Will your hotel have a roof garden or outdoor terrace if you want to sit and read.?? There are some good bookshops if you run out of reading material. I hope you have a very relaxing holiday, it is always beneficial to get away from the telephone. I think the reason we enjoyed the train journeys so much, was no phone, no t.v., etc, just the world of the train, the only decisions to make were what to choose on the menu!! So, it was very relaxing for us. Happy Christmas.smiling smiley

Thank you both for that. I have written in my little book all the addresses and places to visit, so now have lots of things to amuse me whilst Darrell is at cricket.!!!! We are going to do wineries both out of Melbourne and out of Adelaide. SOmeone told us about the visit to Fergussons winery and the wine tour so will do that whilst we are in Melbourne but are definitely doing a wine tour in Adelaide. We read in one of the books we had about a 27 km wine tour by bicycle so for a laugh thats what we are going to do!!!!!. Should be an interesting sight at the end of the day.

Take care and Merry Christmas. See you when I return after the 15th Jan.
