This time last year Ron (hubby) and Oliver (son) biked it Emma and I were the support crew. We planned to do it in three days, as we were concerned about biking in the heat of the day. They started at the Clyde end (stayed in a cabin at the Clyde camping ground) and the first day started about 7.30ish. As we didn't know what to expect, Emma and I packed up the car (they got out of all the cleaning up each day:/) and met them along the trail where the road meets it, and by lunch time they met us at Lauder, where we stayed in a homestay (we ended up with a house to ourselves). In the afternoon we did a bit of tripping around, going to Cambrian and St Bathans. An early start next morning (which was very cold, so take thermals), this day headed for Ranfurly, where we stayed in another cabin. Again we spent the afternoon looking around the surrounding countryside. Another early start and picnic lunch at Middlemarch on the third day completed the trail.
In retrospect, the guys could have done it in a day, but we spent a month touring the South Island, and had booked all our accomodation before we left, so we erred on the side of caution. Ron took his mountain bike, but Oliver decided his wasn't good enough so we hired one at Alexandra, and left it at the garage at Middlemarch. While the guys were biking, Emma and I spent our time photographing (50 odd films). It was great having the afternoons to trip around a bit, as we particularly wanted to revisit Cambrian, St Bathans and the surrounding area.
If you have any queries, please feel free to ask. Hope you enjoy it, it's definitely worth doing. Janet

Hi Kaye, a group of us biked it in November and it was stunning. I organised the trip into three 50 Km days. We too started off staying at Clyde in a cabin - just somewhere to rest our head. We had a backup vehicle that followed us along meeting at prearranged destinations to refill water bottles etc, and they also had morning teas and lunch organised which was lovely. We generally started off at around 9 a.m. before it got too hot. The first day we biked to Lauder and too stayed at Broadhaven Bed and Breakfast - it was very homely and would recommend it. The dinner that night at the Lauder Tavern was one of the best we have had for a long while. The second day we rode to Ranfurly and stayed at the motels. Once again the accommodation suited our needs, but the meal and service at the Ranfurly Hotel was appalling. The third day we rode to Middlemarch and then home to our beds in Dunedin tired, but extremely happy. Good luck - it is an excellent experience.
