Wooden floors

Wooden floors January 04, 2005 12:29AM |
We have wooden floors in our open plan, kitchen/dining/family area. They look lovely when clean, but thats my problem.
As soon as any crumbs drop (all the time with kids on school holidays) or cat fur (and he's constantly malting at the moment), they look dreadful.
I find I need to vacuum, as a broom just seems to move the dirt around, then mop with a sqeeque using meths and boiling water. Thats what the people who installed it, recommended.
Anybody else have wooden floors? How do you clean them? I've seen in the Plastic Centre (or one similar) a huge fluffy headed mop come broom thing, which the lady in the shop said was wonderful for wooden floors. But at $60, I'd like some more opinions, before spending that much.
Thanks
Linda.

Hi there,
I did have a Vileda mop once.
I use Hot water and eucalyptus Oil in the water. makes it very shiny and smells nice too.
But I normally use hot water and Handy Andy.
As for the dirt, have you tried those new brooms that look like a mop with a disposable wipe on the end of it? I havent tried it but I have alot of people that swear by it.
Oh yes, dont use"Klear" on it, it builds up and then you will have to use turps on it to remove it, not a nice job as you also have to scrape it off.

We (this is a royal "we" - namely my house maid and I!!!) use a sweeper that has a flat head and is about a metre wide with orange looped wool instead of bristles. It does a wonderful job of trapping all the bits that usually fly away. I've heard those anti-static cloths are good also, but haven't tried them myself.

Hi Linda.
Please follow reccomendation of the supplier as they know what is best.
At the local scout camp we were told to use just hot water and meths but NO soapy detergents as this take the polish and the sealing coat off and you have to get this redone.
The best way is to teach the children how to use a 'fluffy' mop, I am not sure where you can obtain these now as the one I have is many years old and was sold to my late mother by the "Bon Brush Man"
You could try the brushware place in New Lynn, I think it is called the Brushware Factory shop and it is on Portage Rd, will check next time I'm in New Lynn (probably later today).
Hope that this is some help.

We have polished floorboards throughout our house.. they can be a right royal pain in the *a*(to this housemaid probably as I vaccum every day and every second day I go over also with a Kenwood steam mop, which heats the water up to 95°.
Having said all that there is no way I'd go back to having carpet.
I also have a tip which I cut out of a magazine that I used to do before buying the Kenwood.
"to give polished floorboards a really good finish, use Magiclean on them before moppingw ith very hot water thats had a good splash of white vinegar added."

One of my workmates has wooden floors and at this year's homeshow he bought a little gadget that looks like a space ship. It's half round, with a ring around it to act as a bumper. In the half round part is some sort of brush. It's battery operated, and you just put it on the floor and it goes around at random, bumping off chair legs, walls, furniture, etc, picking up the fluff and stuff. Rather like a swimming pool creepy crawly. I don't know what it's called, and I laughed when I first saw it. This guy's a sucker for gadgets, but now he swears by it. Turns it on and just leaves it to do it's thing every day. If anyone wants more info, I can ask him. Just let me know.

Oh I'd die for a Roomba. We have a white dog that drops hair constantly, and these things just look fabulous. Shame they're so expensive.
