Care of Elderly

As a caregiver I am constantly amazed how families forget about their parents or show no interest in them as they get frailer.
Yet again I have struggled to find clothes for a lady that actually fit her and put underclothes on her that are not ripped .
Can I make a plea that if your parents are in a Resthome take time to go through their drawers and look at the state of their clothing. Unfortunately commerical washing machines gobble up clothes, show no regard to bra hooks and mangle everything else. The number of bras that look good but the hooks are so badly mangled that we cannot use them. Petticoats that lace looks so disgusting and dresses that are food stained or so old fashioned is dreadful.
Please dont wait for the Resthome to tell you. Half the time caregivers make a note to the Bosses but nothing happens.
Your parents may be elderly but that should be dignified and dressed as they would like to be dressed.
Sorry this really is a gripe but a lovely lady I had today it was so sad. All her clothes were far too small and I only had a choice of 2 blouses. Both had buttons missing. Her undies were so stained they wouldn't have been put into the ragbag but burnt AND .... her daughter is a Nurse and should no better.

I have a good friend whose Mother-in-law has just moved to a resthome in Auckland, from Hamilton, where her sister-in-law lives. My friend was shocked at the state of all the clothes, and took Jean shopping. My friend's husband, gave his sister a big telling off, for letting her stuff get into such a state.
They went into a big mall for shopping and you can get the use of wheelchair, so even if they are frail there is no excuse. Also, most places will let you buy stuff, then return it if it doesn't fit, so long as you keep the reciept.
My friend has made a bit of fuss over her mother-in-law and she has gained a new lease of life. I'm sure she must feel better about herself when she is wearing respectful clothes.
Also my friend has named all of Jean's stuff, as apparently sometimes stuff will disappear and when Jean is asked, she'll not recognise what she owns. I guess with the huge amount of laundry, there is the chance of things getting muddled up.
Linda.

Gosh thats really tragic!!! Mum passed away far to young to even get a whiff of a home and Donalds parent have been told, that when they are ready, thay can move in with us.
At the moment Both Doreen and David 's they still pick our kids up every morning take them to creche,School or to
there place then pick them up and give them dinner and hang round our place til we get home
David at 75 still does 12 hour shifts driving a taxi. And we woul not be able to do what we do with out them. I hope that eventually when they are ready we can pay them back. I hope my children will in turn look after me when i get to that stage!!!
Kind Regards
lisa
