High tension powerlines?

High tension powerlines? January 29, 2005 06:35AM |
Can anyone offer any words of advice here? We are looking at buying a lifestyle block of land, which we quite like, the only sticking point is the huge high tension powerlines which run over head suspended between two pylons. The pylons aren't on the land but those noisey lines sure are noticeable. I am concerned about the noise and the possible effects on health. My gut feeling here is "give it a miss".
Thanx,

Eventually you will want to sell this piece of land, and if you're having reservations now, future buyers probably will too. Also I'm a strong believer of following your gut instincts.
I don't think there is enough proof either way, and I'm always one to take the cautious approach.
Good luck in finding your perfect property.
Linda.

Go with Gut Instinct. My friends have a farm in Putaruru and have just been told that they are to have pylons across their land. They are gutted to say the least and are joining a protest group to try and halt it.
You would have difficulty reselling your land in the future. I am also convinced that their are health problems associated with it. Remember in Auckland the Kindergarten protested about the pylons being put up.

Come on you lot - wise up. I own a 56 acre block of land with 2 high tension power lines on it and have had several offers recently of over $1m. (I'm not interested in selling). Have live here with 2 children & DH for 12 years and have not had any worries at all. Don't read in to all the hype.

As an electrical enginneer, I personally would not buy a property where lines are with 400-500meters of the house itself. Lines across a rural property, I really do not see as a problem unless they ruin the view from the house. In the end you do have to concider the effect on the future sales potential, so if it effects you then it will effect and deter others.
As for the medical effects of high electromagnetic fields on the body, well there is a lot of misleading and misunderstood information out there, but that said I have no doubt that there is an effect. From what I have read the industry does have some leads on placing the body close to high current low freq (50-60Hz) transmission lines but nothing ever seems concrete.
One interesting report I recently read commented on one of the few phenomenon that did seem to be repeatable and held scientific interest. This concerned the fact that the body always has a level melformed/mutant cells, that normally are destroyed by the bodies natural defences, if the body fails to defend then the mutant cells start to populate and we have a cancerous situation. What has been noticed is that whilst exposure to high levels of low frequency (50Hz) electromagnetic radiation did not increase the background level of mutant cells in the body, it did seem to prevent the natural destruction of them once created, thus creating a potential cancerous situation. What the report did not detail was the level of radiation required, but further research was continuing.
For me personally, I would not live for any period in a house where high tension lines draped overhead or very near by.
