2nd Weddings

2nd Weddings February 03, 2005 06:31AM |
I am starting to plan mine, and I wondered if anyone had been to a '2nd wedding' as such recently. I won't be wearing a huge white frilly dress etc, but in the last few years have seemed to attend more funerals then weddings, and would appreciate picking your brains - if anyone can help.
I have the venue sorted and they will provide catering, so that is taken care of. But I am thinking of the venue - and just wondered if anyone had tips from what they have seen at '2nd weddings' - dresswise / goodie bags - do they do them???? etc etc etc
Regards, Irene

Irene - that is just so exciting, I have gone all misty-eyed!!
I have nothing useful to offer I'm afraid except to wear what you already know is becoming to you and you feel truly comfortable in.
I have four children (three have never been married but have partners etc - and to make up for that, one daughter has been married twice !!
First time she had the whole traditional thing - cream wedding dress, veil etc. etc. Second time up - wait for it - they were married on the deck of their home amongst the lush beauty of Titirangi - and they wore matching lava-lavas:-o.
My daughter's daughter from her first marriage and the groom's youngest daughter of his 4 children from a previous marriage were ringbearers ( both aged 5) and the whole thing was absolutely laid back and wonderful - the only concession they made was to hire caterers!! I am happy to report that 11 years down the track they appear to be as much in love as they were that February day.
Whatever you do - I wish you all the happiness in the world - most important of all - do it YOUR way!!

Irene - you're organised - but people do keep asking and I'm getting sick of saying we don't know!
Have you set a date? (obviously you have) but I guess any ideas I have would be dependant on the season - friends of friends got married recently on a beach in the scorching heat in barefeet! - everyone had to trit trot really fast up the aisle even though they had woven an archway of tall harakeke flowers and harakeke.
I am going to 2 more weddings this season, one a ceremony at home in Gisborne and another at Waterfall Gardens in Patamahoe (South Auckland) - so I'll be reporting back in full!!!
I've been to both ends of the spectrum, simple vows and friend playing the guitar and we all pitched in for the food to the black lined marquee with antique rugs and furniture and chandelairs with string quartets and catering that was out of this world - but never to a second wedding - I would say it should be much more sedate and with the couple themselves speaking on their own behalves and to eachother - as should any of their children....dunno - but very worth discussing as I may not be a second time around - but I am pushing 40 (can't say that for much longer) and with four daughters between us am hardly the blushing variety garden bride...

I went to a 2nd wedding (for both of them) on New years day which was also the brides 40th birthday. They were married at their home and instead of wedding gifts they asked all the guests to bring food...they had worked it out and asked people to bring either a main or deseerts, finger food etc.....it was a relly lovely wedding. The bride wore a nice embroidered white dress with a beaded shawl (which I made and beaded) it was a really nice day......one of the best weddings I have been too....Jan

Irene, my sister just got remarried and we had the wedding on one of the beaches at Waiheke Island and then went out for lunch at one of the cafe's there that overlook the sea, beach etc. It was fantastic, yet so so simple. It was a small family affair so it was easy to keep it simple. One of my sons took his guitar and sang to the couple after they had signed the papers, another son of mine videoed the ceremony and I was the photographer.
She wore a gorgeous skirt and top that she could wear later. She looked so elegant!! If you want a photo, I can email one to you.
Happy planning

I went to a wedding on the beach some years ago. The bride arrived on a launch, and the two ushers waded out into the surf to carry her and her bridesmaid to shore. Mind you, although the bride was dressed in traditional white, the ushers wore only black underpants and black bow ties. So, a great mix of tradition and humour.
That probably didn't help at all with the question, Irene, but there aren't any rules these days, so just go with what appeals to you.

The couple across the road from us recently both married for the 2nd time in Fiji. Denise did goodie bags for men and women and had a friend in Aus go to the Perfumery Connection and obtain the little bottles of after shave for the men and she put little bath salts & pearls in the women. Along with sugared almonds in little boxes on the tables. Another wedding we were at last October, the bride had made and filled with chocolates little boxes decorated with ribbon & pearls and they had a little love note in each one.

My eldest stepson got married yesterday. It was the brides deceased das birthday. It was held on a Cliff type spot near Caroline Bay. Very simple. They had a quick pop up gazebo which went up 10 minutes before the wedding. The couple looked georgous and casual. The dress was a long very feminine cream dress but one you could wear out. Carl wore black trousers and a white shirt. All their 6 kids were part of the ceremony and involved in the ceremony with the rings.
My second marriage was in mums garden just a month before mum passed away. I have a thing for medieval stuff so i had a medieval style silver wedding dress made, wore bare feet and had a simple ceremony.
Carl and Charlene wrote their own vows.
Donald and i chose vows which suited us. Mum and Donalds mum lit a candle each which Donald and i used to light a centre candle. It all had special meaning to me. it was also the last day mum was able to walk. So I think she used all her strength to stay mobile til the end of that day. Such a strong lady!
So make it all to do with you and how you want it. Its your chance to have the wedding you really want.
Kindest Regards
Lisa

I wore orange for mine. It was a fitting dress with beaded straps.
We had a black tie "dinner" at Mantells in Auckland and as food and wine are a very important feature in my life we concentrated on the best we could afford with that.
We had shiny silver vases on the tables with orange and cream roses and then I sugared apricots and scattered them around the table (summer wedding)
My only regret is that we skimped with the photographer and I am now a believer that you pay for what you get and most of ours were pretty average.

My mother had her second wedding on the Greek island of Santorini at sunset..... amazing! But aside from the location, she wore a simple long cream dress, her husband a white shirt (no tie) and black trousers. We had a simple cake just after the wedding (with champagne) and then all went for a lovely a la carte dinner at a restaurant. A garden or special place you have fond memories of is a ncie location for a second wedding. My Dad got married in the garden beside the volunteer fire station he is chief at! The reception was in the fire brigade social rooms with a simple buffet meal and a friend playing the guitar....

A friend of mine got married for the second time at MOTAT in Auckland. All the guests got to go for a ride in the tram, while bridal party had their photos done.
He was in the airforce so there were a lot of hardcase guests. The whole thing was very relaxed and enjoyed by everybody with lots of laughter. My friend's daughter (from her first marriage) was 6 and was the ring bearer/flower girl.
She wore a lovely apricot dress which she has worn since to a cocktail evening.
Good luck with whatever you and your hubby to be decide. Enjoy!!!
Linda.
