window tinting and heat in the house December 06, 2005 01:01PM |
Has anyone had their home windows tinted? I am only considering it as my babies room is incredibly hot due to all the afternoon sun streaming in (and only in his room). Having the curtains pulled is pretty useless as the heat still gets in. The only other option is a heat pump/air conditioner but I had heard that the window tinting could keep out quite a lot of the heat and is a lot less costly. As well as that his bedroom door would still need to be shut therefore keeping the heat in from the sun as it is right off the lounge. Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

All the windows in my house are tinted, was done before we bought it so have no idea of the cost. I have found that it does make a small difference in keeping temperatures down in the summer. My dining room gets the full blast of the sun from midday and throughout the afternoon and it is extremely hot. This makes meal times very uncomfortable even with the blinds closed so we have decided to invest in a heat pump/airconditioner. Now we just have to make up our minds which one. I remember there was a thread about heat pumps a little while ago here on Foodlovers, so will check that out and also what Consumer recommends.

Thanks for that. I had the man in today and there are various types and grades of tint that will take out heat/glare etc. The one I'm looking at rates at 63% for heat and at the same time doesn't make the room too dark. I was thinking about trying this first and if it doesn't seem to work as well as I would like, then I will seriously look at a heat pump (as they do hot and cold). The problem is that because his room is in a converted sunroom right off the lounge, I have to shut his bedroom door when he goes to bed at night so any benefit of the cool air is quickly replaced with stifling (and I mean hot!) air. Even with the fan on his face he sweats and wakes up very thirsty. Would a ventilation system be a better option or is that more for houses with high condensation?

Poor wee thing. Our lounge is like that. I shut the bilnds as soon as the sun comes in, have a celing fan, and another one, but still it is terrible. We were going to get air con too, but got an alarm so can't afford it. Other hlf doesn't want to get windows tinted as he is scred it will reduce the light in winter. I was told that blinds are just as effective, as if you think about it, the sun is still hitting the window regardless, which in turn still gets hot. Sorry I am not much help, as I'm kind of in the same boat. We have to eat outside a lot of evenings.

Mentioned this subject to my DH and he told me that there is available a mirror tint that can be applied to windows. The outer side is mirror finished thus reflecting light and sunshine and also giving privacy while the inner side is see through. He tells me that this very effectively keeps rooms cool. It was applied to the windows in an office that he once worked in. Might be worth looking into. Now why he has never mentioned it to me before when I have growled about the heat in our dining room I do not know.

we too are struggling with the heat of the house we have just moved into. We will have to invest in a fan as the childrens bedroom is just too hot and the windows cannot be left open at night as it causes a security issue. My step grandson sleeps on the top bunk and it just gets too hot so we have to put his mattress on the floor on really hot nights!!!

Well I have booked the tinting in for the week before Xmas. If it doesn't work all that well then the next step will be a heat pump. The one I'm going for has a 63% heat thingee but unfortunatly has a slight mirror finish (something I wasn't keen on). However I thought that as the whole point of it was to make the baby's room cooler then it seemed silly to go with one that had less- still couldn't do the whole morror thing though! Will let you all know how it works. Thanks for all your input.
