Crumble baked apples - 17 years ago
It's really past the apple season now, so maybe for next year - but reading through Simon and Alison Holst's slow cookers and crockpot recipes, there is one for crumble-filled baked apples which I thought was a bit different and a good idea especially for those who don't like dried fruit filling in baked apples. This recipe has walnuts or almonds in the crumble and the filled apples are slow coby Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Cup cakes - 17 years ago
Hello Lorraine - I'd love to know what topped the cup cakes you saw in Aus. They must be becoming the next food fashion-passion - moving on from muffins? Where they adorned with ordinary icing or did they have the beautifully sculptured works of art as seen from Lisa's pictures? Just interested! Regards, Dawnby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: which vacuum is the best - 17 years ago
We've recently bought a new vacuum cleaner - it's a Miele - very happy with it - it has a choice of several suction powers - but have not used it for a lengthy enough period to be truly critical!!! Meanwhile though we have no regrets! Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Jerusalem Artichokes - 17 years ago
I must be the only twistedtastebuddedf/lovercurrentlyonsite(!!)...... because I really do enjoy them simply cooked in a microwave (as you would a microbaked potato) or roasted (and I do prefer them roasted). Re Lynley's problem - it does diminish in time if you are eating them on a regular basis! Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk

Hello Carla, Here's Lynette's recipe which she has posted some time ago. I make it and it is really lovely winter comfort food!! Regards, Dawn. Re: Cup cakes - 17 years ago
I looked the pictures and thought - these are not for real? I'd love to scrummy through one, two, and piggy, piggy more! (Having said that - I would love to find a way of preserving their visual delight - well yes I suppose a camera!!) Marketing-wise I think they will really appeal to corporate/party theme/wedding/keyofthedoor/anniversary style occasions - i.e. something in the bulkby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Defluffing towels - 17 years ago
Hello Jojo, If you have a clothes dryer and you are desperate and don't mind the expense of running the dryer, I think it should take out a fair amount of fluff if you give them at least half an hour in it - perhaps just on cold adding the towels in their already "dry" state. Re: Shearers lunch in the crockpot/slow cooker - 17 years ago
What about Chinese Mince - I don't brown the mince, just mix all together and put into a large microwave casserole and cook. Next morning, transfer to crock pot to heat in time for shearers: 1 kg mince, 6 sticks chopped celery, 6 tablespoons rice, 2 teaspoons curry, 2 packets Maggi Cream of Chicken soup powder, 3 cups cold water. You can add more rice if you wish. Taste and add more saltby Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: What's your favourite chicken wings recipe? - 17 years ago
I wonder Helen if you leave out the tomato sauce and instead use worcestershire sauce, or lemon juice, or vinegar as there is probably enough sweetness in the honey without the tomato sauce as well? Or for a honey-mustard style use worcestershire sauce, honey, seeded mustard and curry powder. For Thai use soy sauce, fish sauce, lime juice, garlic, ginger, chilli. Re: wedding cake - 17 years ago
Hello Anne S, This morning I came by accident across an English handcrafted cakes web-site and I noticed it had a chart at the bottom giving cake quantities for guests. I remembered having seen a post in Foodlovers and eventually found your query. This is what the Cake Company recommended: The following gives an approximate number of portions - the first number will be for round cake porby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Kawakawa herb - 17 years ago
Thanks for your offer Jojo, but I'm North of Auckland. I can always buy one and plant it too, as we have an area of native planting to do in the future and I'll surely learn what native's what then won't I! What a lovely idea to plant for nostalgia - I remember when I had my first child, my now deceased Uncle telling me parents should plant a tree every time they have a baby and the tree growby Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Kawakawa herb - 17 years ago
Ah Kerry, me eye's lit up when I read it's also known as a Pepper Tree - as I have a Pepper Tree in my front garden! Ah-so-not-so -- not to be!!! Thank you for the link - my computer finally delivered the goods after an agonising wait! Yes, I (think) I've seen the native (well I know I will have seen it, but it can't have made a great feature of itself in my thick mind), but I'm all the bby Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Kawakawa herb - 17 years ago
Thanks for that Kerry! I'm not a good Kiwi I think as I don't know what Kawakawa looks like, and when I went into my google search for a picture it just gave message couldn't contact server or something to that effect, so I gave up. This herb would have been used in Maori medicinal treatments for sure and I'm wondering when inhaling the steam from the leaves of this herb as you describy Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: catering for my own drinks party - help - 17 years ago
A teaspoon of onion marmalade and a teaspoon of of sour cream put side-by-side in miniature pastry cases is popular and can be made days before and then assembled on the day of the gathering. Regards Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Kawakawa herb - 17 years ago
That was quick FluffyBunny - thank you for that - sounds as though it would be a nice addition to a beef pie then! You are welcome to the recipe (or recipes) if you'd like. The third recipe in the article was for Roast Parsnip, Gruyere and Wilted Spinach Pies - something a bit different in the way of vegetable pies. Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Feijoa Crumble Recipe Wanted Please - 17 years ago
Talking of crumbles that are a bit different - Alison Holst has an easy mix biscuit (Lunchbox cookies) and she suggests sprinkling the uncooked mixture on stewed or grated apple and bake as for an apple crumble. I often used this recipe as a crumble, the golden syrup in it makes it a bit different, I'm sure any stewed fruit fruit would fit the bill. PM if you want the recipe. Kawakawa herb - 17 years ago
In today's Viva food there is a recipe for Beef, Field Mushrooms & Kawakawa Pies. I'm interested to know what Kawakawa tastes like? (The recipe states it is available from gourmet food stores). There's also a nice looking recipe for Guava, Vanilla and Ricotta Pies - easy winter fare! Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk

Hello Marion, I've just got to that page in the magazine! The Founders Carrot Cake looks absolutely delicious - it's got that "healthy" look about it. I too am going to make it one day, but will wait for a suitable "occasion" first otherwise I know who's gullet it will go down! I'd say go for it - you will be successful - just make sure you have a large enough cake tinby Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Less Electricity During Busy Times? - 17 years ago
Hello Jennifer, Similarly to Jean, many years ago I noticed that cooking the evening meal was slow as............in fact not normal! I had had brand new hob elements installed. This is a rural area, and so we telephoned our local power supplier who came out to the transformer pole and did a test. At the time of the test, I switched on every element including the stove, also lights etc. -by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: rental property (landlord) - 17 years ago
Hello Vicky, Before a tenant takes over a house a lot of Landlords take photos of every room in the house in case of any problems down the track - they can then produce "before" and "after" senarios. Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Robocan fly control? - 17 years ago
Su, I may be too late for you with my comments, but I have used Air-Guard Insect Control for several years and when the automatic timing mechanism refused to work any longer, I replaced it with two Robocans (cheaper than Air-Guard). We have a large old home (in country too) and put a Robo at each end of the long hall, whereas previously I used one Air-Guard at the end of the hall nearest the kiby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
