Re: For 80 yr old SHE who has everything! - 18 years ago
Hello Lynne, Does your sister enjoy the movies at all? You can buy a set of movie ticket vouchers from most movie chains and she can use whenever there is a movie which takes her fancy and she can use to pay for a friend to go with her. What about buying her a disposable camera - tell her it would be lovely if she took some photos of her favourite parts of the garden and her home, so theyby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Reheating Home Made Fried Rice - 18 years ago
I too am a regular re-heater of rice - usually its the leftovers and its eaten next evening. I think most of us have a common sense approach when handling food, any food, and it doesn't have to be just rice. I can understand there may be different needs when it comes to catering because bulk can slow down cooking cooling and reheating problems. Regards Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
A honey of a strogonoff.................... - 18 years ago
For my early evening's entertainment lately I've been reading Mum's old recipe books. Mum had a habit of using our old school exercise books, two of which are from my biology 3rd form class, and she would paste cuttings of recipes out of (mainly) the Herald usually with a photy of the cookess..............some obviously good cooks and society housewives, or with high profile husband such as Mrsby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

You'd think with their prime site advertising here, they'd expand their delivery boundaries to meet NZ wide demand? If people want good meat cuisine wouldn't they expect to pay the extra for delivery too? Feeling a bit sad for you both......... Sob.....^d^by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk

To add to Kim's good advice I thought this little snippet from the Chelsea Sugar's recipe tips might be of help to someone: Melting chocolate Care must be taken when melting chocolate or you can easily end up with a grainy mess. The lighter the chocolate, the higher the chances of this happening. The most important thing to remember is that chocolate melts better and faster at lower temperatby Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Madeleines - 18 years ago
Yes Toots, too true - I doubt they were $2!! I think I have seen the M-tins in Briscoes as well - but they were probably the silicon ones as Lynne2 has already mentioned. *d*by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Morepork in the garden - 18 years ago

Re: Gift for 80 year old - 18 years ago
Hello KayD, Because you haven't given indication as to $$ to spend so, this is possibly too expensive - but what about a sheepskin car seat cover? You can also get pillow covers which are made of sheepskin and go over the pillow, but under the pillow case, or a car steering wheel cover? Expensive and inexpensive items here! Does he read? Re: Beating up a walnut tree! - 18 years ago
Hello Kerry - Oh gosh........me mind boggles........ but let us know when your MacNut tree flowers and produces nuts.... ...and, better still, what you did to achieve it?? Toots - I understand that tomatoes are self pollinating, but initially I never really understood what that meant, but have come to realise the wind is the culprit. So, in a windless situation in the green houses, baby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Beating up a walnut tree! - 18 years ago
Yes, I'm beginning to think it is true Lynne! Kerry, I remember having pangs of woe as I hammered copper nails into my walnut tree - does seems cruel somehow. I have read that Mac's can take somewhere between 7 and 15 years to flower if they are not a grafted tree. Our tree is not a grafted so that will be the reason why our's has taken at least 15 years to fruit and we have been gettiby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Beating up a walnut tree! - 18 years ago
I listened to most of Helen's programme this morning but I missed a bit of the walnut tree topic but heard the end of the conversation about beating a walnut tree with a bat to make it flower? I don't know whether this was already mentioned, but a friend of mine told me once that she remembered her father hammering a great big copper nail into the trunk of his walnut tree to make it fruit - anby Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Hello Lorna, Woops, sorry, I wasn't intending to sound picky! I was just trying to find the answer to Toot's original question seeing as the thread was going around in circles. Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Daylight saving - 18 years ago
Hello Toots/Lorna, I'm totally lost Lorna, (prob. confused rather) - but have been into my Control Centre - seen default on most of the options - and decided that that's the best option? Daylight saving seems to have been the issue - but we have lived with that OK here on Foodlovers! Toots - you're probably quite right in your initial post? Lorna - Yes or No? Re: What has happened on our forum? - 18 years ago
Good on you Lorraine - I agree with what you say about younger members and food/inexpensive food. For a lot it's all been said before, but that doesn't necessarily help the newcomers to the forum. Yes, we are truly lucky with the beautiful vegs and fruit we can grow in our back yards. But I'm very envious of you in the pineapple department Lorraine! Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Food Talk

Bernadette - I've got it (I think) -ignore my previous message (some mothers do 'av 'em)! You need to click on the words "Log In" at the top of the message box (below). There you will see you can register. Why didn't I check that out first? Aha!! Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Aw, just realised I have put you wrong and you are quite right - that is for the newsletter!! I think those of us who are registered see a bit of a different screen to those who have not yet registered. Re: dramas and some help please - 18 years ago
Irene, I wonder if a topical antihistamine type might work better - I was prescribed a tube of Diprosone Cream to be used sparingly (and with excellent results) on the area where the wasp stung. That happened absolutely years ago and I guess by now that cream will probably have been outlawed for some reason or other. D.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Private Message - Sent Items - 18 years ago
Hello Bernadette, Hopefully I can give a little help too: Click on to the Foodlovers "Home" page, then at the top right hand corner you can click an area there which will enable you to register - follow the instructions. That's all you have to do to have your own control centre - then follow Lisa's helpful instructions. Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Hello Korimako, Good point, and I also believe Helen and Clarie appreciate anyone's suggestions as to fine tuning. I am merely pointing out an example of my suggestion to them and they are not obliged at all to take up on this. Regards, Dawn.by Dawn - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: The Most Unfortunate Incident Concerning Chocolate Brownie - 18 years ago
Hello Nozzie, Gee poor you - your microwave is not going to let you forget about that in a hurry is it! I have heard vanilla essence is good, but not sure whether it's that good, but you could try a good teaspoonful in a bowl of water and give it a good boil up and see what happens. Good luck! Re: Kumera recipe - 18 years ago
Hello Renae, Lucky you! I love kumara more than potatoes! My favourite and simple way of doing them is to slice a bit off the ends of the kumara, then cut an elongated "cross" into each kumara. Wrap individually in a paper towel, wet the paper towel parcel under the cold water tap and put into microwave. Cook on high checking and turning until tender. Re: Jamaican Slice - 18 years ago
Do you think that the only oven cooked part of the slice would be the base Maudie, or do you think that the fruit layer and the custard are cooked with the base and the sour cream topping goes on after the slice has cooled down?
