Re: Starters for Christmas Day - 2 years ago
CarolynC, It's a family Christmas. A plan is worked out and we all contribute accordingly. There are 5 different families within the family circle from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. Secret Santa is also very much involved, tooby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Retro ideas? - 2 years ago
Definitely leave in the chipolatas and sauce, almost every person in New Zealand grew up with those. Even now when it's a child's birthday I see adults suddenly return to childhood. Would they be frightened with: Stuffed savoury eggs Asparagus rolls Fairy breadby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Starters for Christmas Day - 2 years ago
Thanks for each of those suggestions, a great help. Griz, I am a fan of several of Bill Granger's recipes, the one you posted from "tineats" will be one that I will also make for a casual meal at home, too. Thanks for mentioning the mini stuffed capsicums, Noeleen. I like those and will add them to my platters.by Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Supermarket own brands and market domination etc - 2 years ago
The Chancellor here (husband) was commenting on how much our general grocery bill has risen in just a very short time. He keeps his eye on things financial. I am the one who has the background in Commerce and I do understand how difficult some items have all sorts of built-in cost rises. Even so it seems apparent that some rises are because they can. Starters for Christmas Day - 2 years ago
Does anybody have a "show stopper" starter for Christmas day that you could share? Preferably simple, cold and can be served as finger food. The rest of the meal will be reasonably large (or as large as you want it to be) I will also be making these: I buy the ready made crepes. There will be about 20 people ranging from 14 up to 80 years. Thanks, Marnieby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Shortage - Wattie's Peas - 2 years ago
I wasn't looking for Watties peas but I have been looking for the steam fresh vegies, the ones in the serves for 2 people. They were a good standby in the freezer. I didn't really want the ones that include couscous or potatoes.by Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Sausages - 2 years ago
Sandy, I thoroughly endorse your recommendation for Doug Jarvis Butchers. I am sorry that he closed his shop in Devonport Road as it was a lot closer for me. Does anyone know if there is a good version of "carbless" sausages?by Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Condensed milk Christmas cake - 2 years ago
It sounds worth a try, Helen. I have one that is not classed as a Christmas cake but I have adapted it to become one that I make occasionally. Mine does have eggs in it and I usually add a lot of currants amd mixed peel and cherries. From memory I think it came from a book from WDFF or similar organisation. It is always moist (that could be the brandy I drizzle over it) and keeps as long as mby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Why does it cost more to repair appliances than to buy new? - 2 years ago
Thanks for posting that, Dawn. I hadn't noticed it. It is a worry and I hate us being a dumping ground for things other countries have banned.by Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Covid news free zones - 2 years ago
Barbara Anne our own GP told us that he has an a version to needles and in a couple of cases he actually passed out. It can be a very real fear. Although he said he would rather face his fear of needles than the fear of contacting covid19.by Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Covid news free zones - 2 years ago
Almost everyone I speak with says they have had enough of being bombarded with information and misinformation. I am not blind or deaf to what is happening. We were double vaccinated much earlier in the year. I am grateful for that. We had a plumber in this morning and the first thing he asked was...have you been vaccinated. Wise precaution . We may never return to what we once had butby Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Caramel Slice - 2 years ago
Thanks for the guidance re- the condensed milk brand. After using a different but usually cheaper brand I had decided that Nestle gave a better result.by Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Caramel Slice - 2 years ago
Can I just throw a question in about the caramel slice......Do you find that the usually more expensive condensed milk makes a difference? There are usually two different brands on the supermarket shelves, To me they gave slightly different results.by Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Fashion is an Ass? - 2 years ago
In my view those ankle grazer pants don't do anything for the wearer but on me they would be full length or need taking up. If it's 'fashion' some will wear it, regardless of what others may think.by Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Ginger gems - 2 years ago
I am one who uses skin care perhaps more than makeup, specially as we are now. I couldn't see the sense in putting a mask on top of makeup...thank goodness we are all different and " vive la difference". Being outside of Auckland, my hair appointment is for Friday. My chiropractor appointment is tomorrow morning....next the dentist...although they will probably be flat out with tryby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: hows everyone going this time around - 2 years ago
I am not sure whether I am finding it better or worse than the last one. I will leave the politics out of the equation, I'm sure you have your own thoughts about that. It's a joy to see Spring before our eyes, with the daffodils and freesias...plus a host of blossoms and hopefully Spring is a sign of a new beginning. Re: Pedantic NZ Post - 2 years ago
I have a thought that it was the individual you were unfortunate enough to deal with, Helen. They do walk amongst us. I usually go to the same NZ post place, a section in a local Paper Plus store each time and they have always been excellent. A good owner/manager who sets the standard makes a world of difference I have sneaky feeling that NZ post never got over the times when they had theby Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Better Mince - 2 years ago
Once upon a pre-covid time, prices were bad enough by comparison to what they are now. My friend says it's much the same in the UK and what goes up never seems to come down. Beef mince was a good versatile staple, specially for those who are struggling . Good on you PennyG for pointing out the difference in both quality mince and the cost. Mum used to always mince her own beef insteby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Garment Steamer Recommendations - 2 years ago
I can still remember when a friend of my mother was ironing her sheets. The doctor walked in (yes, this is going back awhile), he said.."ÿou are ironing out the best medicine that nature can give you, the vitamin D from the sunshine". Years later Mum was ironing her sheets and I asked why...she said..."This linen cupboard doesn't have much room and it is the only way they willby Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Garment Steamer Recommendations - 2 years ago
Hello Irene. I have a portableTefal Access Steamer. Bought from Briscoes when it was on sale. I don't really have enough room for a steamer with a stand, either. I have a metal over the door hanger and hang the garment/s on that. These days so many garments don't need to be ironed (Halleluja for that!) but there are always the exceptions. I was and still am unable to stand at my ironing bby Marnie - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: What do you eat when you don't know what to eat? - 2 years ago
I felt for you, Griz. We all (well, mostly all) have been in that situation before. I hope it came out well for you. I usually have a couple of meals from Casual Kitchen, a local supplier of prefrozen meals in the freezer. However, I know someone who always has a bag of frozen chicken pieces in the freezer. Many times she has used those. Into a roasting pan with whatever sauce she mightby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Trying to find joy without sugar and less carbs - 2 years ago
It's a situation a lot of us relate to. I look at old photos of the skinny kid and wonder how I got to here. I do watch my weight and over the years dietary changes have been more because of health issues. I accept that I will never be that skinny kid again. I have a reasonable knowledge of the food categories, for years I have known it wasn't because of sugar that caused the most concern butby Marnie - Foodlovers Food Talk
