Re: Coconut essence - 2 months ago
Thank you Danube. I also suggested she check out a larger Four Square store as they often have stock that doesn't turn over as quickly as the supermarkets.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Coconut essence - 2 months ago
I just gave a friend a recipe that includes coconut essence and she tells me it is not in the supermarket anymore. Does anyone know where she could buy some in Tauranga? I did a quick search of the food shops I know over there without success.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Portable food to share - 4 months ago
Our walking group is having the last adventure for the year as a simple walk with a shared lunch in the middle. I am at a loss as to what to take that can fit in a rucksack and not get jumbled about. The only thing I can come up with is cheese and crackers, but I bet it’s the first thing others think of too. I would prefer savoury, and would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Aww how cute. Sometimes in the evening I might rest my eyes for a few minutes - never go to sleep as that's what old people do…..and next thing a doggy nose is bumping my arm. They seem to notice if things change with their people.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
My sense of humour - 4 months ago
I belong to a fun group of stitching ladies who meet monthly but have an on-line group to share bits and pieces - not always about craft. And their sense of humour is refreshing -usually. The other day I posted a photo of a recently completed scarf I have knitted for a Christmas present, together with the following note. “ I soaked the scarf in hair conditioner and now it is thicker and morby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Hi Griz. We bought an AirTag and a holder. The holder wore with rubbing on his collar and the tag disappeared - $50 gone! Now he is just tied up if we go out or have visitors and he is not allowed inside. He has run out of chances - we believe he actually climbs over the gate as he often has a sore leg that gets better after a few days. If he wasn’t such a lovely gentle dog he would bby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Harry the pooch's latest adventure - 5 months ago
We had friends in for dinner on Saturday night to watch the election results unfold. Apparently it was not Harry's choice of entertainment so he wandered off in search of more interesting pursuits. We still cannot find how he escapes! Three trips to the forest, phone calls to the pound and the dog ranger and no-one had seen him. After 12 hours we were starting to really worry and feared forby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Cake - 8 months ago
Another Jenny's fruit cake resting in the tin. Nothing like good old fashioned baking. While the oven was on I made an shortcake with some apples I quickly stewed with lemon juice and sultanas. Oh happy day, a splash of yoghurt and mmmmmmby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
A happy meeting - 9 months ago
Last week hubster and I had a very happy morning in the company of a fellow Foodlovers member and her hubby. We had corresponded via PM and felt like old friends straight away. It gladdens my heart that there are so many warm and kind people out there, and that is what I intend to focus on. Here's to you two S & M.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: The Effects of Technology? - 9 months ago
Sitting in the lunch room and looking around in the silence to sadly note everyone else in the room is on their cellphones. It would be lovely to chat and laugh and get to know people. I wonder if there will be regrets one day at the wasted opportunities.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Victor Borge - 9 months ago
This morning hubby and Harry left early for their walk so I sat knitting with the sun streaming in. Bliss. And then I decided to check out YouTube - well it just went straight to a clip of Victor Borge. That got me grinning. He was so funny in a clever and wholesome way. I was laughing so much I stopped knitting to wipe my eyes. And who could ever forget phonetic punctuation? I knoby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Easy peasy. Plain and simple wins every time. We were invited to lunch and were served home made sausage rolls with a salad. We all woofed it down. And we could all pronounce and identify what we were eating.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: What has happened to our forum? - 9 months ago
Irene, I didn’t acknowledge your remarks re high end comments that started to appear in the forum. I have to agree that there seemed to be an element of elitism - too much MasterChef perhaps? In a sense who cares! I know through PM’s what a lot of people think and that is good enough for me. It was great while it lasted as a sharing platform.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: What has happened to our forum? - 9 months ago
Thanks to rhose who responded. It is sad that the world has become so PC that we dare not comment on those whose opinion or lifestyle differs from ours. Maybe this is what has made us all wary as it seems everything we do online leaves a footprint that could come back to haunt us. I too look up recipes on line but always enjoy asking for tried and true examples. I am sure lots that we findby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: What has happened to our forum? - 9 months ago
Thanks Heather. 57 looks so far and 1 response. So I guess most people do not feel the need to comment. Your reply was thought provoking, indeed the world has changed and we all think differently than we did a few years back. Your Buy Nothing is such a good idea, I needed a new blouse and on the way home from the store I thought about fast fashion and impact it has - maybe a member of Buyby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

When I joined Foodlovers many years ago it was a happy, friendly place to share advice, life experiences and recipes with like minded people. We felt like we knew each other almost like neighbours, rejoicing in victories and commiserating with challenges. There were even get togethers at different locations, I joined one in Tauranga and had a great time. What has happened? Is it the emergby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
A smile for Sunday - 11 months ago
We took Miss Molly our 1963 Morris Minor up to Cambridge for a club outing today. After a pleasant time with fun folks we were making our way home and I was trying not to notice the draughts, the slightly out of tune engine that wanted to cough, the small seats and the rattles as the sun was behind us and the traffic kind. Towards us glided a shiny Tesla and there in the front passenger seatby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Late Developing Baker - 12 months ago
My husband has developed a serious interest in making Hot Cross Buns. The raisins were soaked in rum for 3 weeks, and various recipes were studied and analysed. He had a trial run on Wednesday and I came home to chaos in the kitchen and my man with a huge grin on his face. We stood there fanning them until they were cool enough to eat, slapped on the butter and boy were they good, chockby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Thank you for sharing Gran. That looks a nice tasty recipe with every day ingredients. I find it is always the homely recipes that I turn to again and again - and I might add, they are the ones that get the most “yums” While our family was staying I made things like potato bake and found our son scraping the sides of the dish for the crispy bits. Thanks Danube. I am shopping tomorrow so will see what's there. Reminds me of those lucky dips we had as children, excitement builds…. Of course all I want is Laura potatoes now!by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

That is just what I needed to know. Thank you Danube. I shop at P & S so now know what I am looking for, Interesting that they are Laura which was Dr Google suggested. Appreciate your input.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Potatoes - 1 year ago
Thanks for your input Dawn. We were at the supermarket today and not a red skin potato to be seen. I guess it is the luck of the draw as to what is available. Was starting to think it was all lookers and no-one joining in.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Potatoes - 1 year ago
A couple of weeks back we bought a small bag of potatoes - red skins and a creamy yellow flesh. They are really tasty compared to some we have had and we would like to keep buying them. They are not Desiree. Alas, I emptied them into the vege bin and tossed the bag without a care in the world. Damn. We spent ages on Sunday looking at each potato and trying to assess them, stopping shorby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Just curious Helen, did you finish this book? I found it to be heart wrenching but gripping. I can usually cope with traumatic tales if I know them to be based on fact. What people went through during the depression, from what I have read and what my parent's told me.is harrowing. Notably people would do anything to earn, the government set up schemes called Relief Work where men would lby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Harry’s Hightailing it - 1 year ago
I am utterly amused at the thought that I would be the one announcing that the other Harry was off and running. No doubt he is well covered with trackers of all kinds - especially human. Griz - you are such a laugh....reminds me of one Sunday our weekly coffee group was in it's usual spot in the round a bout of our cul de sac. Harry’s Hightailing it - 1 year ago
Harry is a lovely quiet and affectionate dog, with a bad habit of compulsive wanderlust. He has a forest walk with hubby for an hour every morning but obviously yearns to be there all the time. Fences are good, we wonder if he leaps the gate as he is very agile - we are yet to see it. He now wears an electronic tracker that uses Bluetooth on any nearby phone (crunchy fruit brand) to sendby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Tickled my fancy - 1 year ago
The other day a workmate left a pile of CD's in the lunchroom for the taking. I had a look through and chose Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits which has been playing while I made chutney. “Isn't she lovely, Isn't she wonderful” I sang as I chopped and grated. However…..there was one CD in the pile that brought tears to my eyes from laughing. It was simply titled “Sad Songs”. Just the thoughtby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
