Re: Sausages - 2 years ago
I love Woody's sausages and Poaka sausages. Both are free range, and very good. Woody's also does a spiced sausage meat that made for very easy meatballs that got rave reviews at Christmas lunch. I order online from their websites. Woody's delivery rates are very reasonable. Poaka's shipping rates are more expensive but worth it. I got an amazing ham from Poaka last year that is one of the bestby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Food online ordering and deliveries - 3 years ago
Ones I've tried are: The Ponsonby Exchange - an utter godsend. They only deliver to a small area in Auckland but delivery is $4.99 and same day if you order by 6pm. The website says only Ponsonby, Grey Lynn and Arch Hill but they delivered to e in Mt Eden. Small range of basics (including yeast!) but my favourite find on it is the frozen har gow dumplings. Really delicious and easy and is somby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: The No Knead Bread Recipe from J1 - 3 years ago
I only have wholemeal flour so i used that but I made flatbreads by rolling the dough thinly and coming them in a cast iron pan. I made some bigger ones by cooking them on a pizza stone. My absolute favourite use of the dough is to make frybread. I roll the dough out to about 3mm thick, cut it into squares and deep fry them in oil. They are delicious served savoury or sweet. Re: Coronavirus preparation - 4 years ago
Yes, I'm stocking up. For the past few months I've been whittling down my food stocks because I'm in a position where I can shop frequently and find that buying things as needed suits me better and saves me money. My flat is also very small so storing a lot of food is difficult. In the past 2 week I've bought extra stocks of: pet food coffee dried pulses grains dried vegetables Milk powby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

@TPANDAV: don't cancel your flights, just change the dates and keep changing them until you get to a point when the tickets expire. Most international flights allow free date changes and the tickets are usually valid for a year. Find out if this is the case for your tickets and what the terms and conditions are. Even if you have to pay a fee for changing dates, it might still be worth it to chby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Delaying avocado ripening - 4 years ago
I refrigerate then ripen and they come out great. I've been doing this all summer as my local fruit and vegetable shop has had them due 49c each for most of the summer until last month when they went up to an exorbitant (joking) 69c each!by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Dijon mustard - 4 years ago
I don't eat organic purposefully but Countdown's Macro brand organic mustards are good. I usually get my mustard from Bulk Food Savings in Mt Eden, Akl. The name of the brand I like escapes me because I'm on a horseradish kick (pun completely intended) at the moment so don't have any mustard in the fridge. I don't understand the hype about Maille, why it's considered to be such good quality. It contains sulphur dioxide as a preservative. As preservatives go, sulphur dioxide isn't one of the good ones. I don't think I've seen any other mustards in New Zealand that contain preservatives.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: The demise of plastic bags - 4 years ago
Briscoes had silicone bags as well as reusable bamboo 'paper' towels. I just bought some of these bamboo towels for 50% off in their Boxing Day sale. I have a lingerie wash bag hanging in the kitchen to put the used ones in and then the whole thing can go in the wash. I'm going to make a drawstring bag with an elasticated opening to store the washed ones. GrabOne also sometimes has silicone bby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Have we lost the plot? - 4 years ago
I can completely understand it because I only watched the final and I was devastated. I was in tears and was so glad I had taken the today off work because I don't want to talk about it. The Super Over aspect of it made this final completely unique and the play on emotions was ridiculous. It was way beyond a simple match where the winning team wins by scoring more runs. Re: Bamboo Steamer. - 4 years ago
Marylew, that steamer size sounds perfect. You can use any size steamer on a wok, as long as it's smaller than the wok. It sits on a rack in the wok. You can buy a rack (her Briscoes one might have come with it) or make one of four chopsticks. A bamboo steamer that is bigger than the wok/pot gets the direct heat from the element/gas and can catch fire and burn (I've seen it happen). Here's aby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: New Season Avocados - 4 years ago
I recently participated in a survey about introducing a new frozen avocado product; whether or not I'd buy it, if I would be more likely to buy them in wholes, halves, chunks etc. I don't know if they were referring to locally-grown avocados or not.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Could you use fresh wheat-free lasagne sheets and roll them out a bit thinner, then cut them in half? Or you could experiment with trying to soften wheat-free dried lasagne sheets?by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Small dishwasher - 4 years ago
Okay, I succumbed and bought myself a teeny tiny dishwasher, that I'm absolutely rapt with. I've attached a picture of it. It's perfect for me because it doesn't need to be plumbed in, which is one of the restrictions that I had. It's a Midea Mini Dishwasher and is small enough to fit on a set of office drawers, so I didn't have to sacrifice any bench space. To add to the perfection, it was on spby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Small dishwasher - 5 years ago
I don't know if you were thinking of going this small, but I've been eyeing up the following dishwasher: Noel Leeming and Betta Electrical have it for about $650-$730. The above website includes a full instruction manual so you can read it and see if it would suit you. I would buy it in a heartbeat but I don't have the space in my kitchen at all. I'm currently racking my brains as to how I caby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: So sick of fat versus sugar scone choice at cafes - 5 years ago
Yes, a definite gap in the market is different flavours of scones. I think they would go down a treat, especially if you felt like something a but sweet, but not too sweet. Cinnamon scones, chocolate chip scones, lemon scones with bits of peel, walnut scones, banana scones, so many ideas.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Buckwheat - 5 years ago
I use it instead of bulgur in my tabouleh. I also use them in corn or courgette fritters to bulk them out. I also read somewhere that you could grind up the groats to make your own buckwheat flour.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Mixer/Processor/Blender Combo - 5 years ago
@Janet and Emma: well, the Thermomix has inspired me in a roundabout way. I'd lost my cooking mojo a few months ago and was ordering Uber Eats far too often, but my friend texting me and sending me photos of the things she's made in her Thermomix has revived me. I'm starting to cook more again, and am using my kitchen toys again. I would still consider getting one at some stage...by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Ideas for dinner in this hot weather - 5 years ago
Like Helen, pan fried dumplings are my easy dinner of choice. I buy a tray of 30 for about $8.50 from the Asian supermarket and keep them in my freezer. Here's the way I do them, with veges added: Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a non-stick pan and place the dumplings in. No need to defrost the dumplings beforehand. Fry until golden on one side, then turn over. Immediately pour in a little bit of watby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

My friend bought a Thermomix just before Christmas on a zero interest payment plan offer they had going and for her it's been a revelation. She has always been interested in nutrition and cooking but never really listened to me or her other friends whenever I talked about making things from scratch. She always thought it was too hard. Re: Brisbane: Food recommendations - 5 years ago
I was there in July and one of the restaurants I really liked was Aquitaine, a French restaurant right on the riverfront. I walked through the Botanical Gardens (a nice park but nothing special) to the Goodwill Bridge, then walked over bridge to get there. Re: Besan Flour - 5 years ago
It's a pantry staple for me because socca (chickpea pancakes) are an easy peasy meal basis. You can flavour the batter if you want. You can also use it like a pizza base and I like cooking the batter in a waffle iron to make socca waffles. I want to try making Panisse which are chickpea chips (like polenta chips).
