Eggs... - 7 years ago
My suspicious nature has got the better of me and I have to ask. Are regular supermarket eggs colour enhanced to make the shells look nice and brown. I know that brown eggs are usually produced by various breeds of hens and brown eggs are more attractive for customers. However, yesterday I wanted some hard-boiled eggs and as is usual, copied from my mother I added a bit of salt and a larger thanby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Sending wine overseas? - 7 years ago
Thanks Lorna, I could do that but I would really appreciate personal preference from someone at Foodlovers who might have a site they would/could recommend. Marnie, UK bound gifts, thanksby jen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Sending wine overseas? - 7 years ago
I'd like to send my cousins a bottle of wine for Christmas but have no idea of websites/companies who do this. Any recommendations please? Thank you kindly, jenby jen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Rock Cakes - 7 years ago
I have a nice recipe for rock cakes with the option of sprinkling the tops of the cakes with Demerara sugar. The recipe doesn't stipulate whether to do this before or after baking: so I'm a bit stuck. Input appreciated. Thank you kindly, jenby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Floury Potatoes - 8 years ago
Noticed "new" potatoes have arrived in supermarkets and green grocers. Are 'floury' types still available? If so, which would be okay to use in a potato gratin? Thank you kindly, jenby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Slaters... - 8 years ago
Please could anyone suggest how to evict these things from my planters/containers? There are heaps of them; I am a bit worried about using chemicals etc that might be harmful to my pets and the numerous birds that visit. TIA jenby jen - Garden Lovers Forum
Cheese question. - 8 years ago
I did not know, but recently found out that Parmesan contains cow rennet. Was wondering if there are any with vegetable rennet and if other cheeses contain cow rennet? I shall be taking note of labels from now on TIA jenby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Irene's method of cooking roast pork? - 8 years ago
It's been a while since I had a looky here and I seem to recall a blog , I think written by Irene about cooking roast pork and maybe salting the fat and cooking it on a high heat to attain crisp crackling? Could some kind person direct me to the blog, can't find it at the mo. Thanks heaps, jenby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Just Lit the Fire! - 8 years ago
Cold here in Taupo. Very windy still but no damage thus far. Pets are safe indoors. Husband was hoping for a tree or two to topple over, saving him a job. I swear, if by chance the wind drops over night, bet there's a frost in the morning.by jen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Food and the Deficit - 8 years ago
I some how don't think that my recent addiction to Hob Nobs is going to make much difference to the Deficit, phew! Normally I would try and purchase NZ goods but these little gems are far superior to anything that remotely resembles the lovely biscuits that were once made in this proud land, and per weight of product they are often cheaper...how do they do it? And sadly, Lurpak is a wee luxury noby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: What does one do with a pomelo? - 8 years ago
Thanks Virgil, glad I asked. I'm not particularly fond of grapefruit + SO is on statins.by jen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: What does one do with a pomelo? - 8 years ago
Reading this with interest. Are they grapefruit or not related at all; so would people who take statins and aren't able to have grapefruit in any shape or form, be able to have these? Have some prawns in the freezer and the above mention in a Thai salad has me thinking... TIA jenby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: cast iron from the warehouse - to good to be true? - 9 years ago
Bought 2 cast iron frying pans from the Warehouse over 30 years ago, they are still going well. Have had to get husband to 'fix' the handles a couple of times, but they certainly owe us nothing after all these years. The same can not be said about Circulon, total waste of money. jenby jen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Prosciutto/pancetta? - 9 years ago
Chickened out excuse the pun, didn't use the 'P' so is still sitting in the fridge, so what do I do with it now? Don't have ready access to figs etc. I'm not a meat eater, so haven't really any clue how to use it up. It is in a sealed package so I guess there's no hurry??? TIAby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Prosciutto/pancetta? - 9 years ago
Donna Hay recipe for quick burger patties calls for pancetta to be wrapped around patty then cooked. Silly me got prosciutto by mistake, would it work instead of pancetta? TIA jenby jen - Foodlovers Food Talk
