Re: Destitute Gourmet - 16 years ago
Hi Ngaire. Yes, I tried trademe. I ended up purchasing from a ferrit.co.nz supplier for $26.95 p&p included. Haven't received the book yet but am looking forward to it :-)by Rachel - Ashburton - Buy, Swap and Sell
Re: Rana's Query - 16 years ago
Wheat harvested in New Zealand is harvested at the peak of it's condition when it is ready to be milled. We do not need to resort to artificial means as we farm to the weather conditions. Hope that answers your query :-)by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Crazy Woman Venting... - 16 years ago
I have tried the aggresive angle in the past, (with the bulls' owner) to no avail. He didn't return DH's (Tony - that's Dear Husband :-) phone calls yesterday, however he did get the bulls off the road. There were 3 out this morning which had gone by the time I finished feeding out. I truely think he is a few sandwiches short of a picnic!by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Crazy Woman Venting... - 16 years ago
The council know all about the situation, however they seem reluctant for whatever reason to do anything about it. I often feel like calling the SPCA as the animals on his farm are all emaciated (sorry, don't know if that is the word, cannot think straight right now) and I just want to look after them. Apparently it is our legal right to secure any wandering animals onto our property and then cby Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Crazy Woman Venting... - 16 years ago
Thanks Beverley. I feel like I'm whining about nothing but it affects us every day. Just needed to tell someone! I have just been down to get the mail and our mailbox and attached post are lying on the ground with hoof marks all around. DH is trying to contact neighbour number 2. Will let you know outcome.by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Crazy Woman Venting... - 16 years ago
I need to get this off my chest as it were, and can't say it in 'real life' so I am venting here :-) Dear neighbour number 1. I am sick of your farm workers treating our quiet rural road like it is their own private playground. I hate watching said idiots doing 360's on their (your) ATVs and ripping up the gravel. I hate hearing the thump thump thump of car stereos every time they leave orby Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Can anyone recommend a breadmaker? - 16 years ago
I love it. I use it every day, sometimes twice a day. Never have a bad result, and I have had it at least 6 years or more.by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Can anyone recommend a breadmaker? - 16 years ago

I have dg's first 3 books and am looking for the 4th. I could purchase it from their website but it is nearly $30.00 - surely someone out there has a copy they don't use & would sell to me? Please?by Rachel - Ashburton - Buy, Swap and Sell

Trademe Help - 16 years ago
I must be the only New Zealander who does not belong to trademe! This year I have promised DD1 a digital camera for her birthday but I don't want to spend too much on it. I was wondering if it is safe to purchase something like this on trademe? I have always been a bit cautious when it comes to online trading but have heard rave reviews. Any comments?by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Rawleighs choc cake???? - 16 years ago
I made this yesterday with white wine vinegar, 3/4 cup sugar, Ginger Beer instead of the water (homemade of course!) and 1/2 wholemeal flour. The kids devoured it before I could even think of icing! I think I will experiment with flavourings and this will be a firm favourate.by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Sweet Corn - keeping it - 16 years ago
To freeze your corn remove any excess silk then throw the whole thing in the freezer. Doesn't even need bagging as the husk will protect the ear.by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Freezing Parsley - 16 years ago
Hi Irene. I have found an unopened jar which was hiding in the back of the fridge for several months (don't ask!!) and it was perfect. As for an opened jar, I guess it can be treated like jam. Opened jars never hang around long enough for me to find out a use before date!by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Food Talk

Hi Janice. Yes, 18 mls yesterday! I was so happy I cranked up the stereo & danced through some housework :-)by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: drought - 16 years ago
'Tis 10:43am on Tuesday and not a drop of rain. The grey skys are taunting me. Think I'll go & watch Sir Ed's farewell - now there's a man who wouldn't complain about a bit of dry weather ;-)by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: drought - 16 years ago
Thanks Janice :-) We shifted to Ashburton from Wairarapa in 2003. We had droughts up there but with artisian (sp) water the irrigation was reliable. Here in Mid Canterbury there is a severe water shortage. A different way of farming! On the drizzle front we have had 2.5 mls. A rain dance is in order!!by Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: drought - 16 years ago
Hi maggie40. We have 91 ha and are dairy grazing. Our irrigation bore is dropping daily and the irrigator cuts out after a few hours due to a lack of water. Our bore is only 8 feet deep and we are the only farmers using this aquifer in our area. Stock water drains are dry all the way to the coast and those without water troughs have destocked as there is no water for their animals. Addingby Rachel - Ashburton - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
