Re: Favourite Books this Summer - 6 years ago
Helen, after reading your post and then finding the precis for this book, I've just gone and reserved it from my local library here in Adelaide! Can't wait to read it. Thanks for the recommendationby Heather F - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Thyme leaves - 6 years ago
Thanks everyone glad it's not just me! And it probably is to release more flavour, though I find it pretty tasty anyway (can't decide if thyme is my fave, or sage or tarragon). I've seen those scissors Danube and always wondered if they actually worked.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Thyme leaves - 6 years ago
Am I the only one who thinks it's just plain daft to 'finely chop' thyme leaves?? Have seen it in a few recipes lately. Of course, there could be a large leaf variety of thyme that I don't know about, in which case I'm happy to be corrected....by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Dumb accident - 6 years ago
Ouch Griz! Hope you're on the mend fast. Nothing quite so horrible here in Adelaide but I have a bad habit of cutting towards myself, with the occasional cuts of fingers. I have a chef friend who uses his mandolin without the holder thing all the time and I can't watch.by Heather F - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Morning/afternoon teas - 6 years ago
Hi Gran, Gee that's a lot of morning teas! I think anything homemade would be well received, and what about platters of beautiful NZ fresh fruit, homemade mini quiches and frittatas - they can be hot or cold, and what's a morning tea without asparagus rolls?by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Latest Netflix FAV - 6 years ago
I must be a born-again Luddite lol, as I don't have subscription tv of any sort, (and don't have the Net on my phone either, but that's another story). I'm selective in what I watch on free-to-air, but can, most of the time, find a doco, Brit thriller or movie etc that I want to watch (I don't watch 'reality' tv except Masterchef/MKR), or I read, watch a dvd or watch something on catch up tv onliby Heather F - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Growing yams in Oz - 6 years ago
Just another update from Adelaide. My yams are actually hanging in there and even didn't do too bad last Saturday when we had a 'glorious' max of 42d. I drag the grow bag under the back patio when the forecast is for very hot, then back out when it cools off, and keep them very well watered. They still look spindly, but the stems have thickened up. So there's hope lol! The friend growing them atby Heather F - Garden Lovers Forum

Re: Merry Christmas to all fellow Foodlovers - 6 years ago
Ditto Margaret - it's very clever! And I'd like to wish FL a very Merry Christmas and the best year yet, from across the Ditch - at the moment in Perth.by Heather F - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: New Christmas recipes - 6 years ago
Good luck Mantilla! Look forward to hearing how you went. If you haven't done a butter under the chook skin before, I take my time loosening the skin as it's easy to put a hole in it if you have long nails (speaking from experience lol). and I have a teaspoon with a smaller bowl than some of the others and it seems to work better. Re: New Christmas recipes - 6 years ago
Ah thanks for that Lynne2 - I've had the recipe for such a long time (copied from a former colleague's book), I couldn't recall what book.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: New Christmas recipes - 6 years ago
Hi Lyn - I can't see why not. I've been told by a gluten-free friend that some GF breads are great and some are not, so it might be an idea to find out which is the best to use. So glad you're going to give it a go - I love this recipe - it's almost my 'last supper' request lol.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Looking for a new Kettle - 6 years ago
And I have the K Mart el cheapo one over here and find it very good. Choice also liked it. I got tired of buying expensive kettles that didn't last. And this one is also fairly quiet.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Growing yams in Oz - 6 years ago
Prophetic words in my last post! Today was 37d and tomorrow expected 38 - 39. This is the second burst of these high temps. The first round was followed by a reasonably long spell (2 1/2 weeks) of low to mid 20s, but alas the yams are not liking the heat at all. The friend with the country property says they are struggling and he's expecting to see them deceased when he goes to the place this weeby Heather F - Garden Lovers Forum

You're welcome IngridO! And I've just find out that there's 2 more for lunch Christmas Day so I'll be doing 3 chooks all up.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk

Hi Karen - what about this for a Christmas veggie main - looks delish, as long as you eat eggs and cheese:by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: basil - 6 years ago
Hi Chris & Karena - I wonder if something like this would help. Such a shame that basil doesn't want to 'play ball' where you are; to me it's what summer smells like. There are a lot of upsides to living in a cooler climate though - today here in Adelaide we had 39.7d. Just ghastly, and the forecast for tomorrow is 34d and increasing humidity, with an overnight 'low' of 24. Even though thereby Heather F - Garden Lovers Forum

Very happy to share Lyn V! Just don't make it after work as I did the first time - we had dinner about 8.30 or so lol!by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: New Christmas recipes - 6 years ago
Hi IngridO - here it is. I only have in a PDF format and don't know how to change it: This is from an old Australian Womens Weekly cookbook but I'm not sure which one. Re: Shortbread Making Started - 6 years ago
Hi Helen - is the oven temp for your crisp shortbread recipe 160d fan bake? I'm thinking no, as the biscuits would probably be too brown but not sure. Many thanks.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: basil - 6 years ago
Hi Karena - no I never grew basil in Aniseed Valley but I grow it here in Adelaide. And yup the frosts in the Valley were amazing - we had to leave a tap running slightly in the middle of winter sometimes so the pipes didn't freeze! Good luck with your basil.by Heather F - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: New Christmas recipes - 6 years ago
Hi IngridQ - it's a recipe I was given about 10 years ago. A bit of faffing but we all love it and my nephew said it took chicken 'to a whole new level' whatever that means lol. I can PM it to you, or put it up here. From memory it was an old Oz WW cookbook.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Steamed/boiled meat loaf - 6 years ago
Would love to hear how you go Dawn! And I definitely recommend either partly or wholly cooking the rice beforehand. I neglected to say that quite a lot of juice comes out, so I poured it off into an empty tin before turning the loaf out. I love those old books with recipes pasted in - such a lovely connection with the person who put them together.by Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: basil - 6 years ago
Hi Karena, don't know if this is of use, since I'm in Adelaide, but on our local ABC Radio gardening show this morning, the gardening expert (Malcolm Campbell) told a caller that basil needs high humidity. I've grown it successfully in between tomato plants and thinking about it now, the humidity would have been higher there due to watering. (And I used to live in Aniseed Valley, in another liby Heather F - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Steamed/boiled meat loaf - 6 years ago
Hi All, Sorry I'm only just putting up the recipe now - have been slammed at work lately and been coming home shattered. I have the meat loaf cooking at the moment and will take some pics and add them to this when it's cooked. Here is the recipe as I wrote it down, and then afterwards I'll put what I did. Re: New Christmas recipes - 6 years ago
Hi IngridO, Sorry to say we're probably rather dull as we have the same Christmas lunch every year - French roast chicken, loads of roast and steamed veggies, real gravy, homemade Christmas pud, trifle, tropical fruit salad. The pud, chicken and fruit salad are either only made at Christmas, or special occasions, so they're a treat for us. Over the years we've tried the seafoodby Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: sous vide cooking - 6 years ago
Hi Greg, I'm a Kwozzi - an expat living in Adelaide. And yes I have done some sous vide cooking and have loved the results. I did a makeshift set up the first time with a simmer mat, a zip type bag, and a thermometer attached to the pot handle with a plastic clothes peg and a rubber band! It actually worked quite well, but now a friend has bought a machine and we share it. I have only done smalby Heather F - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Where have all the club sandwiches gone? - 6 years ago
And here in Adelaide we have a thing called a double cut roll. The one and only time I've had one was when I had only recently arrived and went to a deli to get my lunch. When they asked if I'd like it double cut, I said yes, not realising it was a large round roll, cut through the middle twice, and piled high with fillings in both places. It was enough to feed a family of 5 lol! Can't recall whby Heather F - Foodlovers Food Talk
