Re: Vacuum Cleaners. - 6 years ago
I like researching products on an Australian website called Product Review: Product Review website. It has reviews done by the general public so it's good to see lots of different points of view. I agree with J1, to make a list of the features that your daughter considers the most important in a vacuum cleaner because a feature that she considers vital, might not be that important to someone eby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Plastic bags and paper towels - 6 years ago
You can make a cheap and cheerful plastic bag dispenser using an old tissue box. Some of them are already nicely patterned, or you can paint it or glue wrapping paper on it to decorate it. You might have to get a bit creative if you want to attach it to a wall but Blu Tack or some drawing pins might work. or you can just store it in a drawer. It might not be very durable, but it's a good way to rby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Lamb Shanks and Oxtail - 6 years ago
I love lamb shanks but I think I have a mental block that physically stops me paying so much for something I used to pay 50c for. Yes, it's cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I just can't do it! I'd rather spend my money on other cuts/proteins.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Given the small volume of 'black beans' do you think it means Chinese fermented black beans (soy beans)? They would make it lovely and salty and savoury.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Airfryers (revisited) - 6 years ago
Thanks Lorna, yes, I buy the Talley's broad beans. I always have a bag of them in my freezer and absolutely love them. I don't think I've seen the Watties ones. The reason I used dried broad beans for roasting was because I had a big bag of dried peeled broad beans and I've also got a big bag of dried unpeeled broad beans. The dried ones are also cheaper than the frozen ones so I thought if Iby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Mince on Toast - 6 years ago
Oh no, now I want some mince on toast. I love it. I think the mixture of textures that you get from the softened soaked inner toast, the firmer soaked crust, and the crunchy bits of toast that are left uncovered (yes, there is an art to mince distribution) is one of the delights for me. Also, Vogels toast is perfect for dishes like this because its robustness stands up to the moisture.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Airfryers (revisited) - 6 years ago
Oh Dawn, that's hysterical because I take my airfryer when I housesit for people! I agree, there's something different about cooking while on holiday that makes it more enjoyable. I'm not a baker so I haven't baked much in my aifryer. I'd be keen to try making scones because mine always turn out flat. My original model Philips has quite a small surface cooking area so I would have to batch bake.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Unnecessary kitchen gadgets........... - 6 years ago
Despite my enormous collection of kitchen gadgets, I was so delighted to find that I only own ONE of the listed gadgets! I do love my garlic press and I find that the sheer convenience is worth the tiny amount of garlic that is wasted.by DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Heavy drinking advice - 6 years ago
noeleendickson's suggestion that your friend go along to an Al-anon Family Group meeting is a great idea, even if her husband doesn't want to. Another idea might be to have an intervention with family and friends to let him know the impact of his drinking. The Alcohol Drug Helpline (0800 787 797) might be able to give advice on how to conduct an intervention.by DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Crushed Garlic. - 6 years ago
I find the citric acid that is used to preserve jarred garlic changes the flavour completely. I always have garlic powder on hand as my lazy garlic alternative. I find the ease and flavour perfect, especially sprinkled on buttered toast with salt and pepper. The garlic powder I get from my local bulk food shop is a really fine powder. Gregg's garlic powder is coarser but doesn't clump. I think Iby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Sharing plates - 6 years ago
I love sharing plates because you get to try a range of dishes. I agree it's probably not as good value as ordering individual meals, but it's a nice option to have. My elderly parents love it because my Mum's appetite has reduced as she has gotten older, but for some reason she eats a LOT more when we do shared plates if we are eating out. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because food seems more appby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Blue Cheese Salt - 6 years ago
What a nifty idea. It's inspiring me to chuck some blue cheese in my dehydrator and then grind it up to mix with some salt. Thanks!by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Airfryers (revisited) - 6 years ago
Sorry Dawn, have only just seen your post. Glad that you're enjoying your airfryer. Yes, I'm still loving mine and using it just as frequently as when I first got it. It's no longer a novelty gadget for me - it's now the workhorse in my kitchen. Don't you love the fact that you don't have to preheat it and it cooks really quickly? Re: Cannoli - 6 years ago
Even if you pan fry them, they should hold their shape because you're cooking them on a cannoli form. However, they might be more likely to stick to the form if you're not deep frying them. I bought some D-line brand cannoli forms years ago (still haven't made any!). This might be my next project!by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Obesity in Pokeno - 7 years ago
@Beverly. I don't know why your reply to me mentioned being beyond your dignity to reply and hoping I have a better day. That sounds really snarky to me. I just asked a question to which I don't know the answer. I was genuinely curious but now am taken aback at your reply. I'll know better than to express an interest from now on.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Fresh fish deliveries in Auckland - 7 years ago
I subscribed to Freshcatch earlier this year. I subscribed to their Variety Box which is $27.99 per fortnight plus $3 delivery. It's really easy to set up and you can cancel at any time. The delivery and packaging were impeccable and the instructions on how to store fish were brilliant and very useful. However, I was hugely disappointed when all that was in my box was some mussels and some arroby DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
How many careers have you had? - 7 years ago
This year I'm starting my Bachelor of Nursing. I'm 46 and this will be my 7th career. The twenty-somethings I worked with in my old job were all gobsmacked at the amount of different careers I've had and now I'm a bit concerned that it might make me look a bit flighty. Having said that, I was in my last job for 12 years! I've succeeded in all my careers and have been promoted in all of them. It'sby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Would You Share the Footage? - 7 years ago
@IngridO it is really considerate of you to consider the woman's children but this is one of the consequences of their actions that thieves have to live with. Unfortunately, their friends and family have to live with it too but usually criminals aren't the forward-thinking types. Re: Obesity in Pokeno - 7 years ago
I think it's fine that Vanessa45 mentioned the ethnic groups if that is what she observed. She didn't make a "sweeping generalisation" based on assumptions, she reported what she saw. Beverley, what's the story about Pokeno that vindicates obese people eating twelve scoops of ice cream in one go? I'm curious now.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk

P.Y.O. Blueberries - brilliant - 7 years ago
A friend and I went to a 'pick your own' blueberry place in Ngatea this morning and it was brilliant. About 1.5 hours out of Auckland with loads of parking and a cafe. The blueberries are $11.00/kg or $10.00/kg for 10 or more kilos. There are picnic tables outside and they also sell blueberry-related products. Even with today's blustery weather it was getting quite busy closer to midday, with queby DK - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Gooey Broccoli - disaster number 1 - 7 years ago
When I prepare my broccoli like that I drop into iced water then leave it to air dry in a colander until it's dry. I then dry it in a clean tea towel and put it in a large zip lock bag. For the first day in the fridge I leave the bag open a bit so it can continue drying out. I think having it completely dry is the secret.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Vitamins and Minerals - 7 years ago
Vitamin D because I don't get outdoors enough and my darker skin means that I would have to stay outside longer to get the benefits. I've found it's really helped my immune system since I've taken it. I take an eye supplement as I'm predisposed to eye issues and they're the one part of my body that I'm really paranoid about. Re: Salads from the Service Deli - 7 years ago
Oh Lorna, yum yum yum. I think it'll be potato salad for tea for me tonight! I usually do do a potato salad with a vinaigrette instead of a mayonnaise in order to be a tad healthier, but the buttermillk and yoghurt additions are an excellent idea to reduce the amount of mayo.by DK - Foodlovers Food Talk
