Re: Greek Yoghurt Recipe - 5 weeks ago
Thanks for your reply. I was coming to that conclusion having looked at many web sites and reading all the instructions. I’ll just keep enjoying Zany Zeus. Sometimes we have to accept that we can’t copy the manufacturers.by Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Greek Yoghurt Recipe - 5 weeks ago
I have Zany Zeus Greek yoghurt on my cereal each day as it is easily the best I’ve found. Unfortunately it is rather costly. Does anyone have a recipe they use to make Greek yoghurt that is as good as the above? I don’t want to use the supermarket packets though. Thanks Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Carrot Soup recipe, Des Brittain. - 1 year ago
I found a carrot soup recipe last year which was really nice. I’ve made it several times now. Search for “Creamy Roasted Carrot Soup” ( the one I used was on the “Cookie and Kate” site.by Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Air Conditioning/Heat Pumps - 2 years ago
That could well be the same thing Lyn. Our central heating is all or nothing, so having the ability to heat and/or cool individual rooms seems a better option. I’m not particularly technical so am not finding it easy to sift through all the information to figure things out. I certainly won’t be rushing to make any decisions. Re: Air Conditioning/Heat Pumps - 2 years ago
Thank you so much Carolyn for all that information. Far more to it than I envisaged. It’s going to take quite a time to digest it all, but at least you’ve done a lot of the work for me. Now I need to do a lot more reading and then make some decisions. Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Air Conditioning/Heat Pumps - 2 years ago
I’m considering installing an air conditioning system, possibly a split system as the house is large and it would be good to have the facility to control bedroom temperatures independently. We currently have gas warm-air central heating but would like a cooling option too. Does anyone have one of these systems and would be able to give opinions and their experience with what they have and any reby Sandy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Boiling a christmas pudding - 2 years ago
I’ve only just looked at the posts or I’d have answered sooner. Christmas puddings are simmered for the whole of the cooking time. Hopefully this is what you’ve done.. Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Sausages - 2 years ago
I have been buying my sausages from “Doug Jarvis Butchers” in Papamoa, near Tauranga. He is an English butchery and his sausages are nothing like the standard supermarket ones. They’re pretty much solid meat and he has a good selection too. If you look at his website he gives a lot of information on all his meat.I buy other meat from him too and have been completely happy with all of it. I makby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Would a salt grinder that you can adjust the fineness of the grind work with salt flakes? It may even be worth contacting the manufacturer of one of those and checking with them.by Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Horlicks Malted Milk Powder - 2 years ago
I realise this discussion was 8 months ago, but I’ve had an email from “Union Jack’s”, an English store in Auckland (and on-line), and one of the things they now have in stock is Horlicks. Hopefully you have already found some, or a substitute. Their deliveries are prompt too.by Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Yorkshire Puddings - 2 years ago
Has anyone got a recipe for individual Yorkshire Puddings which gives crisp and well risen puddings. I’ve made them in the past but now can’t find which recipe I used. I made some last night which tasted lovely, but they didn’t rise much, and were more custardy? in the middle as Toad in the Hole often is. Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Making your own bacon - 2 years ago
I remember seeing Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, at River Cottage making some once. If you search the net for his website you’ll find his recipe. It looks fairly straightforward too. Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Smoke Alarms - 2 years ago
Thanks so much for the information you’ve all given me. I had read the Consumer report and was definitely looking at the photoelectric alarms. This was where I’d read of the Nest alarm. I had read that steam can set them off, so thank you for all the information Lorna. It’s good to know that they are able to be heard by neighbours too. Thanks for you comment Barbara Anne, regarding an alarby Sandy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Smoke Alarms - 2 years ago
Bought new batteries for our smoke alarms (as recommended), only to find the alarms have an expiry date. I never knew that. These now have to be discarded and replaced. I have been reading up on alarm reviews as there are so many different ones, and some very different pricing. Unfortunately for me, the one that seems to have come out at the top is rather expensive at $199, the Nest Protect A13.by Sandy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Baking for Allergies - 3 years ago
I’m sure there have been discussions in the past but I was unsuccessful in searching for them. I’m hoping someone has biscuit, slice and cake recipes for 2 children who are allergic to eggs and peanuts. Their family is coming to visit Tuesday or Wednesday and I’d like to have something they can eat that someone recommends rather than just searching on the web. Many thanks, Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Skin-on Chicken Thighs - 3 years ago
There has been talk in the past of the difficulty of purchasing chicken thighs with skin on. This week at Pak’nSave they have bone-in skin on chicken thighs for $5.00 kg. They obviously won’t be free-range but at least readily available this week. Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Hi J1 I thought I’d look at a few reviews to see what others thought about it. Have a look at Reviewed.com, choice.com.au, and productreview.co.au. Sounds an interesting concept, but as one of the reviewers said, a bit hit and miss. Sandyby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Memory foam mattress toppers - 3 years ago
Buying the next size up sheets potentially won’t fix your problem. You need to look for sheets that are deeper. A few years back sheets were 38cm deep as mattresses were thinner, and then went up to 40 & 45cm. Now it is reasonably easy to get sheets with a 50cm drop. Many mattresses need at least that depth. Measure the mattress depth including any toppers you have added and then work outby Sandy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Non-sythentic pillow inners - 3 years ago
If you have a Harvey Norman near you they usually have all the pillows they sell on their beds so you can try them out. Find a bed that feels similar to yours as that will help you judge how it will feel once you get it home. For non-synthetic look for latex, silk, wool, tencel (made from the eucalyptus tree) which are some examples. Take your time as there are different heights too.by Sandy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Fat separator jugs - 3 years ago
Hi Sharon I have had one for many years and it certainly does the job. Mine is porcelain, made by Pillivuyt and very attractive. It’s described as a sauce boat or gravy boat. Unlike the newer plastic type it isn’t large and you need to pour slowly as the spout is small. This was the only type available when I bought mine (not dishwasher proof either). If you look on Trade Me under Pullivuyt theby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Don’t know if you have passed through here yet. I’m in Rotorua and would be pretty sure that Vetro on Amohau Street would have them. They’re a Mediterranean food shop and have a wonderful selection.by Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Mmmmm....field mushrooms! - 3 years ago
I am so envious. I remember going “mushrooming” as a family when we were children. We lived in a rural area in Taranaki at one stage and farming friends would let us know when they were ready to be picked. I couldn’t stand them when younger but love them now. I too never peel mushrooms. I have an old pastry brush which I use which works really well. With your reminder I’ll have to put them on tby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Sourdough Starter - 3 years ago
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I shall have a look at the recommendations and try a different recipe next time. It was still satisfying even if it didn’t look at all professional. Hopefully my next loaf will improve.by Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Sourdough Starter - 3 years ago
I gave up on trying the float test as mine wouldn’t float. In the end I decided to just bake some bread and see what happens. That was also a major problem choosing a recipe. I ended up using one on King Arthur Flour. It took a good part of the day, but I eventually baked 2 loaves. They were a bit dark on the top (also put too much flour on the cloths in the bowls they sat in) and had a large hoby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Sourdough Starter - 3 years ago
I decided last week to try making a sourdough starter (I’m now on day 10). It started to bubble the next day and kept doing this for 4 days and then stopped. I was feeding it each day with a mix of 1/2 strong flour & whole meal plus water. It smelt fine the whole time & was rising a bit but not doubling in size as all the reading I’ve been doing seemed to suggest. I discarded 3/4 and sinby Sandy - Foodlovers Food Talk
