So sad to read this. I enjoyed the contributions Virgil made here on Foodlovers and in the NZ Gardner very much.by Lucy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Coffee curiosity - 8 years ago
We have a Nespresso machine. Husband loves the intense flavours - Ristretto, Dharkan, and Kazaar. For a number of years I have been a decaf drinker (for health reasons, not by choice) and really enjoy the whole range of decaf capsules available.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk

IngridO Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Please don't say we import BEEF as well?!? Sorry Ingrid, yes we do import beef as well. I always check that I am buying NZ beef. Have seen Australian scotch fillet in the supermarket quite a lot this year. It has been labelled as Australian in small type under the large lettered SCOTCH FILLET. So check your labelby Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Butchers bacon scraps - 8 years ago
I buy the kilo packs of butchers bacon offcuts from the supermarket and use it in pies, quiches, also cheese and bacon and onion scones or pinwheels. Very economical and delicious.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: The Scam Price of NZ Honey - 8 years ago
Cheese Lover, thank you for your lovely reply...... I really wasn't offended. Just wanted to say that a lot of us choose not to buy honey as we find it too expensive. Yes I agree the price is not a scam, just way too much for me to justify purchasing it.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: The Scam Price of NZ Honey - 8 years ago
I do not believe for one moment that by not buying honey it means I am not supporting bees or apiarists. It means that I cannot justify paying a large amount of money for what I consider a luxury, not a necessity, to spread on my toast once in a while. To those of us who choose NOT to buy honey - It is OK. We are not bee murderers. We are allowed to make this choice, and not feel bad aboutby Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: The Scam Price of NZ Honey - 8 years ago
Yes, I too have stopped buying honey. I simply will not pay the exorbitant price.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Do you have reactions to certain foods? - 8 years ago
Cream, sour cream and ice-cream are an absolute no no for me. Creates stomach cramps and the dreaded diarrhoea. So, have to be extra careful when eating out. Dips and sauces and a few desserts are always suspect and I ask everytime if they contain cream as I have been caught out a few times. This is a recent thing for me. Up until a few years ago I very happily scoffed cream in all it's formsby Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Happy to see Oomph here as I didn't know it existed. Have always used De-solv-it as it does work, but oh how I loathe the smell! I'm hoping Oomph is not the same!by Lucy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Dinner Party etiquette - 8 years ago
If this is happening over and over again with the same people why don't you ask the host/hostess why they are doing this and indicate that you won't be preparing anything for the proposed dinner if they prefer their own dessert rather than anything you would bring. Blunt yes, but so is the hosts actions in not serving anything you have contributed.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Whats the best cut for slow cooked melt in your mouth meat? - 8 years ago
My favourite meat for stewing/casseroling slow cooking is cross cut blade. For a slow roast you can't beat a slow roasted forequarter of lamb IMO. Vanessa, regarding leaving the oven on and safety, just think of it as leaving your refrigerator on, or your hot water cylinder on. Used correctly all our modern appliances are built to be time saving devices and the safety standards they must meetby Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: My daughter won't wear warm clothes - 8 years ago
I don't have much more to add as I didn't have to face this problem with my lot. As the seasons changed I started packing away the pretty little dresses that held no warmth and replaced them with warmer clothing. Out of sight, out of mind. Worked for my kids.by Lucy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Kitchen crime - 8 years ago
I'm a firm believer in using my microwave at every opportunity. I know, I know, crime of the century for some to even have a microwave in the house.....nevertheless I do, and I love mine, and that is what I would bring into play with your venison....defrost! ....it's a fabulous setting on a microwave when I've forgotten to take something out of the freezer for dinner.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Travel Luggage - 9 years ago
I'm in the market for new travel luggage and wondered if anyone had some good advice in regard to this. I have soft sided luggage which has been 'borrowed' by a traveling granddaughter. This is unlikely to come home to Nana in the near future, and as I have a trip booked for later in the year I thought it the perfect opportunity to purchase some lovely new luggage. I have seen the gorgeous patby Lucy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Those gorgeous wheelie cabin bags - 9 years ago
Hello to all the lovely travelers here on Foodlovers. I'm after some advice on which type of luggage to buy. I know this discussion is about hard case not soft sided but thought I would ask anyway.....is it better than soft sided? My soft sided case has been lent to my granddaughter and I rather think it will not be coming home to me..... haha. So the perfect time to go shopping for new tby Lucy - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

What a legend you will be Ngaire! I'll bet those grandchildren of yours will remember and retell the story of the day Nana let them dig in to 2ltrs of icecream with biscuits for the rest of their days. Re: Summer 2015 - tried any new dishes lately? - 9 years ago
I made a broccoli salad for the first time last weekend. Truly delicious. I loved the sweetness of the cranberries and the crunch of the pine nuts and pumpkin seeds. I am going to swap out the pine nuts for sunflower seeds next time I make it as I have a large container full of them and pine nuts are a bit on the pricey side for me. The family loved it, there were requests to make it again soby Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk

My mother (Burmese) always called them Brinjal and therefore that is what we children knew them as and I still think of them as Brinjal, but we used 'Aubergine' when purchasing them.by Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Hoki - do you buy it? - 9 years ago
Fresh fish is an absolute treat meal in my house. We do try to include it in our menu once a fortnight if it is on special. I will buy what I really like rather than what is deemed "sustainable". If I am paying hard earned money for fish I will not be persuaded to purchase something just because it is considered the correct thing to do. Tarakihi, Gurnard or Schnapper in that order aby Lucy - Foodlovers Food Talk
