Re: Childhood food memories & Cobb & Co - 6 years ago
I don't remember the name of the dish but my Dad loved those steaks brought to your table on a very (very) hot metal plate. I think they would have kept on cooking too & you daren't touch them And yes I mainly remember the pasta bars too, & the rainbow coloured drinks. It was very exciting to go to dinner there for this country girl tooby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Phone companies - 6 years ago
Hi Lyn V - just thinking about your comment on needing to change your email address if you change your ISP. I too have had my email address forever, a very simple & easy one to remember. (I am also a Lyn in real life, so it is my name @ somewhere ) & so I knew that I would never get that username again with xtra or vodafone (& other similar isp's) just because there are nowby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: RIP Kenwood mixer - 6 years ago
hi marylew - I cant help with prices but think it was about $850 - a wild guess only as mine was a birthday gift & altho I was in the store at the time I carefully averted my eyes when the price tag was shown. The mixer gift was offered, I just needed to choose which one - so felt very lucky.by mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: RIP Kenwood mixer - 6 years ago
I vote for Kenwood - have had mine now for just over 18mths & it is fantastic. Lots of accessories that came with mine, like the blender & I got a mincer attachment too. But - I love the look of the KA, just divine sitting on the bench top. Good luck with your choiceby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Buying new bed - 6 years ago
we purchased a Simmons Beautyrest Do Not Disturb bed, maybe 11 or 12 years ago from HN & like Helen am looking forward to the day it will be replaced. There is a layer/cushiony top too & for much of the time we have owned it, a distinct ridge in the middle of our bed, sloping out to the edges. Luckily its a King size, but both of us sleep towards the edges of the bed I know that itsby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Lamb Shanks and Oxtail - 6 years ago
I love oxtail but like others also quibble at the price, especially as we still have an adult son living here who would probably demolish a whole tail by himself. We too used to live on a farm so have been spoiled with the previous availability of meat & other small goods. But I cannot bring myself to like lamb shanks - not sure if the ones I have tried have been hoggets (or older) but theby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Frontloaders - 6 years ago
I have an aunt with one of these combo machines & she too has noted the length of time for the dryer to dry her clothes - in fact she now uses a drying rack in her conservatory. Not much help sorry. I have always thought too that I would have an absolute load of wet washing waiting to be dried as some days I might do 2 or 3 loads of laundry - so the machine would be going constantlyby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Slow Cooker recipes - 6 years ago
hi Danube, I will sometimes saute onion, celery, garlic etc beforehand (if I have the time & organisation allowing ) before adding to a slow cooker as I too have read somewhere that onion will take much longer to soften & cook fully. I guess all hard veges to a point - but sometimes it is just a toss in & turn on the cooker before I head out the door. Will be interesting to hear otby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: What time do you eat? - 6 years ago
I breakfast pretty early, soon after 6am when I first get up, then have quite a long break until my lunch, often happy to wait until nearly 2pm. (I have an office job) Dinner is early though maybe 6 or 6.30pm so my longest break is the "fast" before breakfast. Husband is pretty firm on meal times & prefers lunch at lunchtime (by the clock, not his stomach necessarily) & weby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Obesity in Pokeno - 7 years ago
wow - I dont post on here often (& fully agree that we all have different opinions & viewpoints raised here at times) but thought that the OP was sounding pretty judgemental. A health crisis is something for everyone to consider & maybe this particular community is already aware of issues there, but in the end none of us should mind what others are doing, if it is not directly eby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: School holiday boredom - 7 years ago
I feel for you Ingrid - I have 3 boys & can remember them complaining often that there was never anything interesting to do. They are all past school days now, but it was so frustrating for me then & is obviously so for you - especially when the days are hot & sunny, & perfect to be outside exploring & having fun. Maybe if he has some chores to do he may find that making hisby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Pomegranate Juice - where to buy - 7 years ago
I have seen a recipe in the Nov/Dec 2016 Taste magazine using strawberries & (pure) pomegranate juice. Has anyone seen or bought the juice to advise where I can look to buy some - all I have seen in our local shops are reconstituted juices with additions of apple juice, water etc. The recipe needs 2 cups, but am happy to halve the recipe & use less if I can only buy a small jar, containeby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Best Calorie counting phone Apps - 7 years ago
I use MFP too & on my Android phone- just love that I can scan the barcode from the food item as I consider it/prepare the meal & the info is all saved to the program. Def recommend it. I would think too any updates would be within the program & not on the medium (ie phone) it is used on.by mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Something Old, Something New... - 7 years ago
when I got married (many moons ago, lol) the something old I had was a white lacey hankie of my late grandmothers, & the blue was a flowery something on the garter I wore ... & sorry cannot remember the new or borrowed (maybe my dress as new, haha). Does your friend have something special or sentimental of her own, or a family member that might tick off a few of those boxes. Have fun,by mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

thanks Helen, yes already am thinking it is very clever (& cannot say too much without noting the story) but loving the new little bits of Daniels family circumstances. So far so good!!by mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: This Must Be the Place - Maggie O'Farrell - 7 years ago
I picked up this book at the library last week & started it last night ... so this post is good timing. I agree that the first chapter is hard going & I had been thinking to not continue my read - but shall perservere now, thanks.by mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: House insurance - 7 years ago
A number of years ago when the change of determining a level of insurance by clients, rather than taking on the Ins company value came into effect I watched a program - Fair Go maybe, which had 3 different people use the website checklist to detail items on their properties (verandahs, retaining walls, decks, pools, number of rooms etc), as well as a quantity surveyor doing the same process on thby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Whats your favourite Chilli sauce? - 7 years ago
with such a mild summer, autumn & even winter (when will it arrive ) I still have many chillis hanging off their frost bitten plants in the garden, which leads me to answer your question Vanessa, with me finding & using a great recipe by Irene on FL here. Irene has "tweaked" another recipe by Ruth Pretty, so look first for that site & Ruth's (Peter Gordon) recipe & thby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Best Breakfast - 7 years ago
I too occasionally eat chia porridge for breakfast & agree with you about how it does seem to fill you. But I think it may be a combination of the fat content too which will keep you fuller for longer as your body digests it all, whereas carbs/cereal may be absorbed (by some) more quickly. This is my understanding of some of the Banting (low carb, high fat) reading that I have done. Its aby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Silverside water - 7 years ago
I would think though that it is a relatively salty liquid leftover as the very nature of silverside is that it is a brined or salted meat, so other uses will be limited by that alone. If to be used then maybe only with a stronger meat so that it doesnt take up the saltiness or corned flavours. Sorry, but I would toss it, as the cloves/peppercorns/bay leaves etc are not expensive ingredients toby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Crowd funding - 7 years ago
I agree with all of your posts above; it is saddening to read some of the Give A Little pages that sound very desperate for funding, but agree that my/our disposable dollars cannot stretch to all of these & we have our selected charities too. But I have donated in the past, to a personal friend for funding to travel overseas for advanced cancer treatment, so can understand that for some thby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Tips and Tricks - 7 years ago
Like Vanessa I often make up a "batch" of sofrito (I think this is what Annabel L refers to it as) which is a vege mix of celery, onions, carrots, etc etc - the bottom of my crisper usually - & sweat it all down in olive oil. This can be frozen for a casserole base, but will also keep in a sealed jar for up to a week. Super handy to make ahead for dinners on the go. editedby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: New user name - 7 years ago
haha Irene, & if like my work passwords, cannot be any of the past 3 passwords you have used (or too similar), so no chance of say, using "me123" & changing to "me456" My little brain is filling up with lots of useless info as it gets older & can never remember impt stuff like passwords - so I too have a special book in a secret place. I think too that this sby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Dating shows - 7 years ago
interesting how many here havent watched these shows, lol as I agree there is almost saturation of this style of TV on at the moment. But, I am not much of a TV fan anyway(spending longer online though) & my DH has the remote anyway, so not much of a chance. But I do work in an office with 10 or 15 others, & although many of us didnt watch The Bachelor it was of great debate there witby mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Commonsense Eating - 7 years ago
Maryloo & I had an intresting debate (?? ) a few days ago about Paleo & similar ways of eating ... but I too have previously commented on one of the Healthy Food Facebook pages about why just the high carbs/low fat diet was being promoted as the only way to lose weight & was shot down with comments about how unhealthy any other choices are - but without any reasoning to support theby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: toddlers and kids on Paleo - 7 years ago
hi Maryloo - I acknowledge that the insulin resitance I mentioned before is "self diagnosed" but only after a lot of reading & deciding for myself especially after I noticed varying results in the hours & days after eating carbohydrate based meals. But as I said above, I strongly believe that we ... are able to make informed choices, & with respect, disagree with you thaby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: toddlers and kids on Paleo - 7 years ago
My thoughts on the above are that we should be able to make an informed choice on the types of diets we follow & not necessarily what we always have done, esp if thats not working any more. I have been following a Banting food program (low carbs/high fat) for about 3 mths now, which has taken this 50+ brain a wee bit of adjusting to, but each week is easier. Especially as my go-to comfortby mantilla - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Present - 8 years ago
Does he enjoy a whiskey or special red wine?? Maybe a voucher for a movie or show he could be interested in, or dinner at a local restaurant. Probably would recommend a doing gift rather than a (for example) photo frame or tie, when these can be more personal tastes. Good luck.by mantilla - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
