Do you know the name of this shrub - 1 year ago
I pass this tall shrub often when I am dog walking and while it is at the end of its flowering season, for weeks it was covered with pretty pink and also white flowers. I have tried to google what it is but can't find it. Does anyone know?by helen - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Climate change - 1 year ago
Nellie that does seem unusual. I checked my daphne but no sign of any flowering activity at present. I will be interested to hear what happens.by helen - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Multi cookers - what do you cook in yours? - 1 year ago
Interesting that we don't seem to be a multi cooker community. I don't have one either. I have a slow cooker but it is right at the back of the pantry and hasn't been out for a very long time. Because I work from home I tend to rely on my LeCreuset casserole dish for slow cooking in the oven and otherwise it is just the usual.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Finger Limes - 1 year ago
Lyn I am so pleased to read this as I have been glaring at my horrible little prickly finger lime that doesn't seem to do much at all! Certainly no flowers. Have you got yours planted in a pot? Mine came in a grow bag and I do feed it but wondering if I should move it into something else although I am not keen on handling it.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Sesame Oil - 2 years ago
That is interesting J1, I am a huge fan of sesame oil and usually but the Oh Aik Guan brand. I didn't know re the heating of toasted sesame oils but will now put some more thought and investigation into it.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk

When recipes are contributed by readers/listeners to a cookbook such as NZ Radio and Television cookbook, they would be difficult to copyright really. I am very happy for the recipe to be shared here as would be pretty sure that we are not intruding on any copyright issues.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Books - 2 years ago
I have just read The Lincoln Highway and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the journey and self discovery of 4 boys whose paths are varied and complex. i found it slow in parts but over all a really good read. I particularly liked the character of Billy, the youngest of them all. I am now struggling with whats next so if anyone has recommendations then I am keen to hear.by helen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat

Re: Tongs - 2 years ago
I had severe burns on my arm a year ago from trying to fry arancini using tongs that had lost their spring and the tips didn't meet. i dropped an arancini into the oil and it splashed all over my forearm. The pain was extraordinary and it required daily Dr visits for a few weeks. Good tongs are now a priority.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Plum sauce recipe - 2 years ago
Does anyone have a great plum sauce recipe that they are happy to share? I have a tree dripping with plums and we just don't seem to eat that many. I find that unless they are really ripe then I get an instant stomach ache from them, so aside from giving them away, which I am doing, I also thought I would make some sauce.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Food shortage - 2 years ago
I went to our local NW this afternoon and was shocked to see no sugar, little flour, no rice, little pasta, no baked beans or spaghettii, very little bread no panadol etc... Thankfully I didn't need any of the above but found it a weird feeling to see such big gap.by helen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Florist orchid pots - 2 years ago
Ahh that is interesting re the hydroponic growing Irene. My repotted Phalaenopsis is looking very happy and I too on another sad specimen today from a friend. That too has been repotted and is sitting in our very warm (hot) television room so will see if I can revive it.by helen - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Florist orchid pots - 2 years ago
Barbara Ann I too use the same little pink bottle of liquid feed but missed the bit about spring/summer feeding so my poor orchids get fed all year round and flower for most of it. I will give them a rest this winter. The orchid I repotted is looking so much healthier, to my novice eye, there was too little bark in the original pot and this one now has a layer of bark at the bottom plus enoughby helen - Garden Lovers Forum
Dividing zephyranthes/rain lilies - 2 years ago
My zephyranthes are becoming over crowded in patches and bulbs are being pushed up above the surface. While I can move these around, in summer it isn't ideal to do too much replanting. I am thinking late March is probably a good time to disperse them, do you agree?by helen - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Meat label meaning - 2 years ago
J1 I haven't noticed that labelling and nor do I know what it means. I too wonder if M/B is minced beef but that still seems a bit odd. Interested to hear what it is.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Ideas for red cabbage please - 2 years ago
Raw Energy salad is a favourite around here as is Asian style Slaw although I do appreciate that you have already made slaw. I like red cabbage in minestrone soup but it is a bit hot for soup right now.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Florist orchid pots - 2 years ago
Are florist orchids in pots different to what you would buy in a garden centre, in terms of growing medium etc... being organised for long term life? I have noticed that the orchids I have had from florists or inherited from others to try and revive back to life seem to have little bark or other growing medium in their pots and I wondered if this was intentional or not. Any thoughts? I have juby helen - Garden Lovers Forum
Re: Woks - 2 years ago
I have had the same wok for years and years. I bought it at an Asian supermarket for around $30 (or less) and seasoned it by following instructions online. I wipe it out after using it and then make sure it is dry, that is it. It has never rusted and just keeps on going, it is light weight and I would highly recommend buying the same.by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Advertising on here - 2 years ago
Unfortunately ads are a fact of life for websites as it is the only way of getting some revenue really. This is not written it terms of wanting sympathy but the ads pay for my hosting and little else. The websites that work on a paid subscription don't have as many but I am not going down that path. it is a fine line really.by helen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: NZ cherries? - 2 years ago
Apparently it has been a great growing season, exports are not as good as growers would want them to be so why are we paying $40+ kg for good quality cherries at our greengrocer? I am sure last year they were more like $30kg max, Any thoughts?by helen - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Making my first sourdough - 2 years ago
Plates over the weeks I have realIsed that the starter is very forgiving. I found The Perfect Loaf website to be so helpful and in particular the recipes for My Best Sourdough If you do go to this link then scroll right to the bottom and you get to the printable recipe. I follow his advice but I don't check the dough temperature and nor do I get into the science. I have printed the recipe, itby helen - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Netflix - 2 years ago
I like subtitles for two reasons, first being I like to hear the actual actor speaking as opposed to someone dubbing in. Secondly it makes me think that I may be picking up a bit of French/Spanish or whatever the language may be.by helen - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
