Come on people - 3 years ago
If we look at each post and compare the right and left columns, what does that tell us? It is obvious that a lot of people come to the forums regularly to see what is happening, but if no more than just a few of us post regularly there won't be a forum. If I can post about everyday things then surely others can find something to write about, or we will all just drift off and not bother.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Changing hair - 3 years ago
Ah. Cauliflower hair... The first time I heard that was when we went to see The Irish Rovers in concert several years back. As we mingled in the foyer waiting to enter the auditorium I overheard someone say “Look at the cauliflower heads - are the ambulances on standby?” At the time I thought it was rather mean, but now I just shrug my shoulders and enjoy each day.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Changing hair - 3 years ago
Now that I am in my golden years.....my hair is gradually going curly. I always had very straight hair and wore the best bob in town ( well my hairdresser and I thought so anyway). As the colour drifted off into my memory the curls started to appear. So the bob has now gone and in it's place is a sort of grandma cut, part on one side etc. My hairdresser thinks my hair is still great as itby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Plum sauce - 3 years ago
Thank you everyone. In the end we used a very eclectic collection of a gin bottle, a French jam jar with the checkered lid, some instant coffee jars and various others we found. Next time I will be more prepared!by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Plum sauce - 3 years ago
I have a large pot of old fashioned plum sauce on the bubble. Lovely neighbour sharing the bounty of her heavy trees. Another neighbour has checked out all the stores for glass bottles - and the shelves are empty.. Could the sauce be kept in ice cream containers in the interim? Alternately, would plastic vinegar bottles be okay? Funny how you just presume things will be available, unby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Food trends - 3 years ago
Yes Annie H. It is all about the company. Although we all like to try cooking different dishes, I sometimes wonder if we are trying to impress rather than looking forward to spending time with our friends and or family. I have learnt to use my judgement as to what to take or serve - especially after the Tiramisu experience. Many years ago we had a friend of my husband for afternoon tea -by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Supermarket bread - 3 years ago
Can anyone tell me what “Honest Bread” is? There is an advertisement showing on TV for a chain of mall bakeries that says they bake good honest bread. I don't get it.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Serves me right! - 3 years ago
I have a friend who broke her shoulder so I thought I would bake her a fruit cake so she had something to have with a cup of tea. Well....we all know the old saying “no good deed goes unpunished”. I decided I would make one for her and one for us - straight after each other. I know, I know. So the first one came out okay and I left it in the tin for about 5 mins before whipping itby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk

Re: Food trends - 3 years ago
I was thinking about drinks parties in the 1960’s when we were newly married. We didn't seem to have dinner parties then, just a gathering after tea. Such innocent times comparatively, we just danced and drank Pimms or Horses neck, sometimes wine out of a box - and 90% of us smoked cigarettes! Yikes! I remember really impressing everyone when I brought out half oranges that were studded witby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Harry the kleptomaniac dog - 3 years ago
We have had Harry our rescue dog since October. Initially he was so timid and despondent, he didn't bark for weeks and needed (still does a bit) constant patting and reassurance. With this nice weather we leave the back door open while we have our coffee in bed in the mornings - Harry can hear us and be part of it all. The other day I was so surprised to see 5 shoes, 3 socks, a piece of saby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Handyman - 3 years ago
My husband is a great handyman, has always repaired, painted, created and nutted things out. My father was the same, but had more willingness than ability. I just take it for granted that the only time we need a tradesman is for legal requirements or very specialised jobs. It must have saved us thousands of dollars over the years. I hear other people lament that they have to pay for evenby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Tomatoes - 3 years ago
We were given some young tomato plants that are doing well - small fruit forming nicely. What is exciting as the original plants come from heirloom seeds brought out by Italian immigrants many many years ago. A relative of my neighbour is close friends of the elderly couple. Every time I think about how many people have enjoyed these special treats it really thrills me.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Weird Place to be now. - 3 years ago
I try to put things up, but obviously there is not much appeal in my efforts. Sometimes there might be a couple of comments but dozens of lookers. At times the forum gets very technical and maybe people with less knowledge feel intimidated - this was said to me in a PM when I was feeling a bit “put down”. Some people are happy to jump in and comment but seldom put up a post. We can but tryby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Food trends - 3 years ago
Just looking at the thread for Sourdough and the comment that it was about a year after the trend - I worked it out I got my first starter in 1983. A missionary from the USA brought it out in a thermos flask - could you imagine that these days? Ha. I made rolls and cinnamon buns for years and then one day realised I hadn't used the starter for quite a while - and it had died. I literallyby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Missing items - 3 years ago
Sorry to scare you Lorna. In today's bad news climate I try to put up little things that might amuse people. Who knows. Here's something I think is funny - our rescue dog Harry is finding his feet and his personality is coming out. We leave the back door open in the mornings so he can hear us having coffee and chatting in bed. Well....today he was very busy as we found 5 shoes, 3 socks, aby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Missing items - 3 years ago
Having redecorated my sewing room a couple of weeks back, I decided to have a good tidy up and sort out. I am a keen quilter with 2 machines set in custom tables, also lots of threads, tools, fabric and so on. The room looks lovely - but do you think I can put my hand on a lot of things. It reminds me of when we shifted from Hamilton, for months we would ask each other “Where is the so aby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Supermarket bread - 3 years ago
I worked for Goodman Fielder for almost 10 years and was astounded at the additives that went into bread - and that was in the 1990's. We used to call the everyday bread “white death”. In those days they made a good bread called Mulhousen, the process was a lot slower than the other products, it was my favourite. For years now I have been making Nadia Lim's Easy Seedy no knead bread, most pby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Re: Jigsaw puzzles - 3 years ago
If you could describe that container I would appreciate it - I have seen a flat container with lift out sides for the pieces that stacks and the covers come up to keep it secure. That was on line though and $80. I wonder if the Mitre 10 one is wooden? Thank you.by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Meatloaf Recipe Wanted - 3 years ago
Here is one I used to make from that era - it was always well received. Sorry it is not metric... MEATLOAF 1lb sausage meat, 1lb mince, 1 cup breadcrumbs, 2 chopped onions, 1 dessertspoon curry powder, s & p. 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, 1 egg, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup water. Combine all of the above except the milk and water, beat until well combined then gradually add the liquids.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Jigsaw puzzles - 3 years ago
A friend has been distributing dozens of jigsaw puzzles that belonged to her mother. She asked me what I would like and sent a few photos. I loved one of the Titanic loading up to sail - she gave me that one plus 6 others. Well, talk about hooked now....every day I can't resist adding a couple of pieces here and there. It is so soothing and someone said it is good for your brain - hope so!by Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Shortbread gone soft - 3 years ago
We have just eaten the last of the shortbread baked Christmas Eve. It was less than perfect, not at all crisp. Which got me to thinking of the best way to store them. I put a paper towel in the bottom of an S brand storage container with clips on the lid. What do others do? My husband has the perfect solution - just eat them faster! I can always rely on his wisdom!by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
The illusion of colour - 3 years ago
We are redecorating our bedrooms after about 30 years or so. Our room was dark green with a floral frieze near the top. At the time we loved it as it was very trendy. Now with the possible thought of downsizing we are redecorating in a very neutral palette that is the modern way. Just putting the furniture back in our white and grey room and it seems so much bigger. I know it isn't buby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Christmas dinner - lots of work - 3 years ago
Our neighbour kindly asked us to join her family and friends for Christmas dinner. It was lovely to be included and I took a lemon cheesecake with blueberries to add to the table. Plus a bottle of French champagne I had been gifted at work - never had wine that came in a presentation box before! She had ordered a dinner for 14 from one of the meal supply companies - it was all very nice howeby Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Update on Harry the rescue dog - 3 years ago
Roughly 7 weeks into our ownership of Harry the rescue dog, he is shaping up to be a real honey. Everyone loves him. We had a tradesman here the other day and he just gushed, his wife emailed that night and offered to dog sit him anytime, and if we needed to re-home him, could they have first dibs. Isn't that so lovely. I have taught him to sit for his treats - which for a non dog lover isby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
Re: Fruit cake - 3 years ago
I bought mine from the supermarket in the international section. I also use it to flavour meringues (with pink colouring) and marshmallow. However, if you don't want to buy it just for making this cake, perhaps you could use another essence. I am sure the forum contributors with more experience than me could make further suggestions. Hope the cake is a success for you.by Ali W - Foodlovers Food Talk
Eye glass cleaner - 3 years ago
Our large chain optician no longer sells refills of their cleaning fluid. I was thinking it is probably a fairly simple combination of ingredients - anyone have any ideas? The assistant suggested water and a drop of dish wash liquid. Thanksby Ali W - Foodlovers Non-Foodie Chat
