I think we got our original piece from the Thai Products shop in Mt Albert, next door to the lawnmower shop on the corner of Lloyd Ave.

It grows very readily in Auckland and in our previous garden it was becoming a pest. We've recently moved house and have replanted the galangal, which is just starting to grow (if it was more established I could give you some). I love fresh galangal and as well as using it in curry pastes I treat it as a vegetable in the Lao way - very thinly sliced with chicken and coconut milk. It does need to be very fresh for this though.
